A Japanese aquarium found itself in an unexpected predicament when rising food costs forced staff to rethink what they were serving their animals. In an attempt to cut expenses amid soaring inflation, keepers decided to swap out the animals' usual fish for a cheaper variety — a decision that did not go over well at all.
The penguins and otters had long been accustomed to a diet of aji, a rich, fatty type of horse mackerel popular in Japan. But when its price jumped significantly, staff introduced saba — common mackerel — as a partial replacement. It was leaner, more affordable, and, as far as the keepers had hoped, similar enough to do the job.
The animals, however, had other ideas. Penguins were spotted picking up the unfamiliar fish only to spit it back out without a second thought. Otters took one cautious sniff before turning around and walking away entirely. According to the head zookeeper, the creatures appeared sensitive to even subtle differences in the size and texture of their food, making the substitution impossible to pull off unnoticed.
