Building your own studio, fine tuning the acoustics can easily become obsessive. To control room modes I already have massive SLAM (membrane bass traps) in the front corners and an absorption chamber in the back.

Now, for the back corners, due to the placement of the entrance door and the door to the machine room there is no space for large traditional constructions. So I approached PSI Audio to test their new AVAA C214 Digital Active Bass Traps. I started to experiment with one of those and ended up with four mounted and tuned. The sounding result is surprisingly effective. RT60 below 100Hz is reduced from 0.7s to 0.5s and the frequency response in listening position smoothed out by 6dB. The perception of transient response in the low end is greatly improved due to reduction of masking in the time domain.
