Shuddhashar FreeVoice

Shuddhashar FreeVoice Magazine, Publication, and Non Profit Organisation. Est. 1990. In 2004, we also started a publishing house. Some of our authors were also threatened.

Shuddhashar FreeVoice (শুদ্ধস্বর) was established in 1990 at the advent of the little magazine movement in Bangladesh as an independent magazine and periodical of anti-establishment writing, working towards a broader socio-cultural movement. Shuddhashar was one of the independent little magazines in Bangladesh from the 1990s to the early 2000s. Fr

om then until 31 October 2015, we published more than a thousand books. We became well-known for our commitment to soliciting and supporting young writers, promoting critical thinking and progressive ideas, and publishing material otherwise deemed too controversial. These controversial publications — which included books critical of religious and social restrictions and taboos — led to us receiving several threats of violence. Two of them, Avijit Roy and Ananta Bijoy, were killed in 2015 by radical Islamist militants. On 31 October 2015, one of Bangladesh’s radical Islamist militant groups stormed our office to kill our publisher. Assailants detained all the staff while calling for blood and struck down the publisher with a machete. He survived and continues our work to this day. Today, Shuddhashar FreeVoice is a non-profit organisation committed to promoting freedom of expression, social justice, and democratic culture and values. We aim to inspire and encourage at-risk writers, artists, and journalists. The platform focuses on being an intellectual and secular voice for Nordic countries — where we are now based — and the many countries from which our exiled contributors have fled. Our primary mission is to publish work at the intersection of politics, free speech, activism, and literature. We remain committed to inspire writers and activists, particularly those facing risks or living in exile, by offering them the opportunity to share their voices and exchange ideas and thereby contribute to social and political change. At Shuddhashar FreeVoice, we firmly believe that truth is multifaceted and that each of us bears the responsibility of engaging in dialogues as a unified international community to seek solutions to global challenges. By fostering connections between individuals, knowledge, and ideas, we strive to address cross-border societal issues collaboratively and set a constructive model for debating and implementing solutions. We dedicate our platform to writers at risk in all parts of the world where expressing opinions and facts has become dangerous. We are committed to those who have written in pursuit of truth; who may have stumbled along the path towards knowledge; who risked their lives for equality, recognition, and justice; and who insist on the right to question and challenge the status quo. Shuddhashar FreeVoice remembers those living in exile, whether in fear or safety, hiding or waiting. Too many have lost their lives because they wrote. We hope others will be inspired to pick up their pens and write for a better world. Our Reader Base
Our reader base is committed to social justice, free speech, LGBTQ+ rights, refugee rights, democratic equality and progress, and the environment. We furthermore encourage students and young people to engage themselves in these issues. We know that if the youth are politically engaged, there is a better chance of achieving world peace, preserving democracy, and averting the climate crisis. We actively seek and publish talented writers and welcome pitches from aspiring contributors. Feel free to reach out to us with your unique ideas and perspectives. Our goal is to publish works that positively and constructively contribute to our mission. We do not publish content that promotes hostility or endorses stereotypes targeting any specific group of people.

Disappointment in two articles of American faith — capitalism and democracy — is shaping contemporary American and global politics. Jack David Eller writes in his latest letter to America.

Disappointment — especially in the failed promises of capitalism and democracy — is a driving force in contemporary American and global politics.

In our special webinar, “Connected Struggles: Social Media and Youth Movements from Afghanistan to Cambodia,” youth activists Samady Ou and Friba Rezayee and our Oslo Scholars interns engage in a vital conversation about the challenges and possibilities of activism today. They discuss diaspora activism, the role of student movements, the strengths and pitfalls of social media, and their efforts to strengthen education and democracy in the face of repression by the Taliban and the Cambodian government.

Trump may keep some Iranians and Middle Easterners aligned with his imperialistic agenda. But his deceitful and neoliberal policies have inevitably created a powerful opposing force grounded in humanist values. Mehdi Davari-Torshizi explains in his letter to America.

Trump may keep some Iranians and Middle Easterners aligned with his imperialistic agenda. But his deceitful and neoliberal policies have inevitably created a powerful opposing force grounded in humanist values, resisting Trump and his ilk from freely fascistizing the earth.

On August 16, 2025, Sahara Rabil Chowdhury — a trans woman, artist, and activist — was expelled from Sylhet Metropolitan University. Her so-called “crime” was creating protest art that depicted the severed heads of two right-wing rabble rousers who have long incited mob violence against Bangladesh’s q***r community.

Protest art is not terrorism. Sahara’s drawings are an act of defiance in a country where trans people are systematically denied education, employment, healthcare, and safety. Sahara’s refusal to “compromise” with a society that has criminalised and dehumanised q***r lives should not be punished. Instead, it should be honoured.

The decision to expel Sahara is unjust and dangerous. It sets a precedent that punishes those who resist hate while protecting those who spread it. It signals that the lives, dignity, and futures of trans people in Bangladesh are expendable.

We join the South Asia Solidarity Initiative and Bangladesh Gender Liberation Project in demanding:

The immediate reinstatement of Sahara at her university.
Protection for her safety and educational rights.
The abolition of Section 377, an outdated colonial law used to criminalise q***r lives.
Legal recognition of q***r marriage and of broader LGBTQ+ rights in Bangladesh.
Some local right-wing media have dangerously twisted the narrative, framing Sahara as a “terrorist” while ignoring her leadership in the July uprising and her courageous fight for justice for Bangladesh’s transgender martyrs. International journalists must resist these distortions. We call on reporters to cover Sahara’s story with nuance, integrity, and historical memory — to amplify her voice rather than erase it.

Silencing Sahara today will only embolden more violence against trans people tomorrow. We must stand together to demand justice, dignity, and liberation for all.

Marieme Helie Lucas, a renowned Algerian feminist and sociologist, opposes secularism and is pessimistic about the state of feminism and progressiveness. Find out why in this Shuddhashar interview.

Marieme Helie Lucas was born and raised in Algeria, but she was forced to flee into exile after the rise of extremist Islamic politics in her country. Recently, Shuddhashar had an opportunity to interview her in-depth and engage in a lively conversation.

Located in Urubamba, Peru, Valley Camp is a nonprofit organisation that empowers local and international youth with environmental experiences across the Sacred Valley. In an interview for Shuddhashar, Ella Harris Perin seeks to understand how the camp’s goals centre on youth engagement and how the young participants understand their environment.

Place and community are primary motivators for nourishing the next generation of change-makers in Peru.

Kara Alford urges us to refuse to be a stepping stone on the path to an unjust future and use our voice to advocate for what we believe.

Feminism provides a human cause for equality and justice to unite behind, because the personal is political, and because our lives should never be subject to debate.

AI is challenging education in new ways – both positve and negative. We need to make certain it is used for its democratising potential.

Shuddhashar started its journey as a Little Magazine in December 1990, publishing writings by contemporary and anti-establishment writers. Between 2004, when Shuddhashar began book publishing, until 2015, more than one thousand novels, stories, poems, and essays were published as hard copy books. After the attack on Shuddhashar's publisher and office on October 31, 2015, all of Shuddhashar’s activities in Bangladesh were halted. Now, Shuddhashar is functioning as an alternative online platform to organize people's thoughts and opinions about freedom of expression, freedom of press, human rights, democratic values, and good governance. Poets, writers, artists, rights activists, freethinkers, exiled writers, and at-risk writers are presenting their ideas, observations, and opinions on this platform.
