Our POV on Wushu Degree of Difficulty Techniques (most of the aerial techniques) 🤔
In the various disciplines of Wushu competitive events (modern competitions), many of the acrobatic movements that fall under the “degree of difficulty” category are not something that Wushu Keys is particularly fond of. However, this does not mean that our perspective toward such movements within Wushu is entirely negative.
All the videos that we are currently uploading on this page are prepared strictly based on the Wushu Taolu Competition Rules and Judging Methods issued by the International Wushu Federation (IWUF) in 2024.
There is no doubt that such difficult jumping techniques practiced within Wushu play a significant role in the physical and mental development of trainees. However, since Wushu, from the very beginning of its development, has been not merely a practice for displaying physical skills but rather an art of intelligent self-defense and combat in any situation, some of these highly difficult jumping and airborne movements appear to be somewhat meaningless.
It seems that the sole purpose of these movements is to make competitions increasingly challenging. Certainly, such acrobatic difficulty techniques help strengthen essential physical attributes required in Wushu training, such as muscular strength, flexibility, agility, endurance, and overall athletic ability. Yet, despite these benefits, from the perspective of scientific training and sports science, continuous and repetitive practice of these movements can, in some cases, ultimately be harmful to the body.
Even if we temporarily set aside these difficult jumping techniques, most Wushu disciplines remain highly challenging to train, understand, and master even without them. For example, one can look at the traditional styles under Changquan, such as Chaquan, Huaquan, and Fanziquan. Similarly, under Nanquan and Taijiquan, there are numerous traditional and profound systems enriched with deep philosophical foundations.
Many of you here may have practiced these styles or may already possess knowledge and mastery of them. Wushu Keys sincerely welcomes your valuable thoughts and perspectives on this subject.
Thank you.
