The town has significant economic importance for Nepal as most of the trade with India is via Birgunj and the Indian town of Raxaul. Tribhuvan Highway links Birgunj to Nepal's capital, Kathmandu. Birgunj was one of the first three municipalities formed during the rule of Prime Minister Mohan Shumsher Jang Bahadur Rana. It was declared a Metropolitan City on 22 May 2017 along with Biratnagar and Pokhara. Birgunj is one of the largest city in Nepal and largest in Madhesh Pradesh. वरिष्ठ नेत्ररोग विशेषज्ञ डा. सन्दुक रुइतले आफ्नो जीवनको साधना अन्धोपन निवारणमा अर्पण भएको बताएका छन्। प्रधानमन्त्री सुशीला कार्की नेतृत्वको अन्तरिम सरकारले उनलाई मन्त्री बनाउने तयारी भइरहेको चर्चा चलिरहेका बेला उनले सोमबार यस्तो धारणा सार्वजनिक गरेका हुन्।

डा. रुइतले भने, “मलाई हरेक राजनीतिक उथलपुथलपछि कुनै न कुनै पदमा बसेर नेतृत्व गर्न आग्रह आउँछ। तर, मेरो कर्म भनेको नेपाली र संसारभरका बिरामीको सेवामा आफ्नो सीप, ज्ञान र समय दिने हो। नेपाल र नेपालीको नाम संसारभर पुर्‍याउनु हो।”

उनका अनुसार राजनीति वा पदभन्दा पनि पेशागत इमानदारीले नै देश परिवर्तन सम्भव छ। “सबैले आफ्नो पेसा, कर्म र व्यवसायमा इमानदार भएर लागेमा मुलुकको अवस्था बदल्न धेरै समय लाग्दैन,” उनले भने।

डा. रुइतले आफ्नो पेशागत योगदानलाई निरन्तरता दिने प्रतिबद्धता व्यक्त गर्दै सबैलाई एकताबद्ध भएर देश निर्माणमा जुट्न आह्वान गरेका छन्।
