Starting 𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟭𝟰, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟱, I, Sanjay Rai, decided to take a serious dive into 𝗷𝗮𝘇𝘇 𝗴𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿. 🎸
I enrolled in the 𝟯𝟬-𝗗𝗮𝘆 𝗝𝗮𝘇𝘇 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 by 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗷𝗼.𝗰𝗼𝗺.

I’ve always thought of jazz as pretty complex, but curiosity got the better of me 😄
So I’ve committed to practising 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝟯𝟬 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀 (and hopefully beyond).

This video is my 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 from the challenge. I’m demonstrating 𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, played over a backing track provided by 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗱𝗼𝗷𝗼.𝗰𝗼𝗺. I’ve focused on targeting 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 through each chord change of the progression.

The improvisation includes 𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗳-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 as well as 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗕𝗮𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗲” 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸, as covered in 𝗠𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗹𝗲 𝟮 of the challenge.

🎸 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻 – 𝘎𝘶𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘳 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬 🎸

Back in the 1990s, when we performed 𝗗𝗲𝘂𝘀𝗶 during Tihar with only a handful of instruments and minimal equipment, our setup was simple yet spirited: three acoustic guitars, a set of congas, a tambourine, one or two microphones, an amplifier, and a couple of soundboxes (speakers).

As an opening piece, we used to play a beautiful guitar instrumental composed by the late 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗿, fondly known as 𝙃𝙮𝙯𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙎𝙪𝙣𝙞𝙡. The tune was performed entirely on acoustic guitars accompanied by congas and tambourine. Two guitarists would strum rhythm parts with extra vigor to make themselves heard, while the singer’s microphone was aimed toward Sunil’s guitar so that his melodic solo could project clearly above the rhythm guitars and festive crowd noise. Likewise, the percussionist would play the congas with full energy, and the tambourine player shared the same fate as the rhythm guitarists and percussionist—giving their all to ensure their part cut through the lively ensemble.

As a tribute to the composer, the late 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗹 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗠𝗮𝗴𝗮𝗿 (𝘏𝘺𝘻𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘭), I have reproduced this instrumental — 𝗿𝗲𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 in places — to revive its joyful essence. The composition beautifully blends 𝗔𝗲𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀 with touches of the 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲, giving it both melodic charm and emotional depth.

The piece originally had no title, but since we are from Dharan, I’ve named it “𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗗𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗻 – 𝙂𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙧 𝙄𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙪𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙡.” It can be performed on both electric and acoustic guitars, and I’ve included two versions:

🎸 The 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 with guitar solo;
🎸 The 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 (solo-less) for guitar enthusiasts to jam along, enjoy, and relive this timeless piece.
