Rai People Diaries We, the Rai people, are one of Nepal’s oldest indigenous tribes. Also known as Khambu, we inhabit eastern Nepal.

As part of the Kirati group, we honor nature, ancestral spirits, and proudly resisted Gorkha invasions to protect our identity.

Harka Sampang’s Lipu Lekh Protest

In August 2025, Dharan’s independent mayor Harka Sampang Rai marched 22 km from Dharan to Vedetar to protest the India–China agreement reopening trade through the Lipu Lekh pass. Nepal claims Lipu Lekh, Kalapani, and Limpiyadhura as its own territory under the 2015 Constitution, but India and China moved ahead without Nepal’s consent.
Carrying banners with the slogan “सिमाना मिच्न पाइँदैन, छिमेकीलाई हेप्न पाइँदैन” Sampang called the deal an attack on Nepal’s sovereignty. His peaceful protest echoed the concerns of Nepali leaders and citizens who view Lipu Lekh as part of Nepal.

Great news! Dharan Sub Metropolitan Mayor Harka Sampang’s dream project, the Sumnima Paruhang Statue and Park, is set to begin construction soon. This is a zero government funding project, fully supported through public donations.
The process of purchasing land and providing compensation to those already residing in the area is nearly complete.
The project will be built at Chinde Dada, approximately 7 km from Bhanuchowk.
