Breaking News from Nepal
Kathmandu, the capital city, was hit by a significant 6.1 magnitude earthquake today at 7:39 a.m., originating in Dhading district. The quake sent tremors throughout Bagmati and Gandaki Provinces, leaving people on edge.
In Dhading, just 90 km west of Kathmandu, four aftershocks occurred within 29 minutes of the initial quake, measuring 4.3, 4.3, and 4.1 in magnitude. These continuous tremors have sparked panic among the population.
While, fortunately, no casualties have been reported, there have been landslides in various parts of Dhading, causing a few houses to develop cracks and some trees to fall.
Nepal's vulnerability to earthquakes is well-known, given its location where the Tibetan and Indian tectonic plates meet. They creep two meters closer every century, releasing pressure in the form of these earthquakes.
Just a week ago, on October 16, Nepal's Sudurpaschim province experienced a 4.8 magnitude earthquake. This is a stark reminder of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 2015, which claimed around 9,000 lives.
As per the government's post-disaster needs assessment, Nepal ranks as the 11th most earthquake-prone country globally. Stay safe, Nepal! 🇳🇵
