Gender-based violence remains a pressing issue in Nepal. Strengthening laws and improving law enforcement to combat domestic violence, sexual assault, and discrimination against women and girls should be a top priority. Let's raise our voices against such injustices and support initiatives that provide support and protection for survivors.

Lengthy Trial Delays
Prolonged trial delays deny justice to both victims and defendants. In Nepal, the backlog of cases has been a persistent challenge, leading to increased frustration and eroding public trust in the legal system. It is crucial to address this issue by investing in adequate resources, improving judicial infrastructure, and enhancing the efficiency of court proceedings.

In 1992, Stella Liebeck, a 79-year-old woman, spilled a cup of McDonald's coffee on her lap, resulting in third-degree burns and the need for extensive medical treatment. She sued McDonald's, claiming that the coffee was unreasonably hot and caused her injuries.

The case gained notoriety due to the seemingly outrageous nature of the lawsuit. Media outlets portrayed Liebeck as a frivolous litigant seeking to profit from a common accident. The story became a symbol of excessive litigation in the United States.

However, a closer examination of the case reveals a different perspective. Liebeck's injuries were severe, and she initially sought only $20,000 to cover her medical expenses. McDonald's refused to settle, which led to the high-profile trial.

During the trial, it emerged that McDonald's served its coffee at a temperature much higher than industry standards, around 180-190 degrees Fahrenheit (82-88 degrees Celsius). Such high temperatures could cause severe burns within seconds. Moreover, McDonald's had received numerous previous complaints about burns from its coffee.

The jury ultimately awarded Liebeck $2.86 million in punitive damages, which was later reduced to $640,000. The case sparked a debate about product liability and the responsibilities of corporations towards their customers.

While the case itself was not intended to be funny, it has become a source of humor and parody in popular culture due to the initial misunderstanding and misrepresentation of the lawsuit by the media.

Overcrowded Prisons
The overcrowding of prisons in Nepal is a serious concern. It not only compromises the living conditions and well-being of prisoners but also impedes the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs. We must advocate for alternative sentencing methods, such as community service or electronic monitoring, to alleviate this problem.
