Nepal’s gold jewellery sector is facing increasing pressure from changing import quotas, higher taxes, and ongoing risks of smuggling.

Gold has long been part of our culture and economy, but the industry that depends on it is struggling with unstable import policies, uneven distribution, and rising costs. Frequent shifts in quotas and duties have created uncertainty in supply and led to sharp price fluctuations, making business planning difficult for jewellers, writes Mukesh Jodhani, a gold jeweller with over a decade of experience in the industry.

If Nepal is serious about building a transparent and globally competitive gold market, it needs consistent import rules, fair distribution of raw gold, and a predictable tax system.

Without timely reforms, the ongoing cycle of shortages, volatility, and informal trade will continue to weaken a sector that sustains thousands of jobs and makes a meaningful contribution to the national economy, Jodhani further argues.

For generations, gold jewellery has been more than a business in Nepal. It is tied to our culture, weddings, festivals, savings, and family traditions. Every necklace, ring, or bangle sold in a jewellery shop carries emotion, trust, and craftsmanship built...

Nepal’s problem is not how much money is allocated, but how little is effectively spent.

In this op-ed, Shalav Rana argues that scarcity of budget is not the core of Nepal’s development bottleneck, but a profound deficit in state capacity and ex*****on productivity.

Shifting our national conversation from how the budget is sliced to how efficiently it is executed will build the institutional trust Nepal's public sector desperately needs, Rana emphasises, recommending three structural reforms.

Read his recommendations here:

As the Ministry of Finance finalises the national budget, the annual ritual of public debate has grown predictably loud. Sectoral advocates demand larger slices of the fiscal pie for education and health, while the private sector pleads for tax relief....
