A joint technical Search & Rescue team from the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA) and Nepal Mountaineering Instructors Association (NMIA) was deployed to the Chilime Hydropower tunnel in Rasuwa on August 29, 2026, following a request from the hydropower company, with helicopter support from Simrik Air.

Initially planned as a long-line rescue/access operation due to anticipated muddy conditions, the team was able to land directly near the tunnel entrance as the area had sufficiently dried.

During the operation, the mountain guides recovered the body of a young female, estimated to be 15โ€“16 years old, along with separate lower-leg remains. The remains were handed over to the authorities for identification. The team also discovered a camera bag at the site.

About an hour later, Nepal Army personnel joined the operation, and both teams conducted a joint assessment of the tunnel. The mountain guides advanced approximately 120 metres inside the tunnel, but encountered a complete blockage caused by thick mud and debris.

With the passage fully obstructed, the team determined that further progress cannot be made through human effort alone. Heavy excavation machinery and pumping equipment will be required to remove the accumulated mud and sludge and allow the search to continue.

Following today's technical assessment, the NNMGAโ€“NMIA team returned to Kathmandu while remaining ready to assist in further search and rescue efforts.

Mountain guides from the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association (NNMGA), supported by Simrik Air, pushed 120โ€“130 metres into the mud-filled Chilime Hydropower tunnel while maintaining rope protection, but chest-deep sludge prevented further access to the blocked section.

The team plans to deploy a hose pipe and pump/motor system to remove the mud and sludge, with hopes of reaching people who may still be trapped inside. One deceased person was also found outside the tunnel during todayโ€™s operation and was transported by the Nepal Army.

The NNMGA team remains on standby and ready to mobilize whenever called upon by the Government of Nepal.

The Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA) has launched a humanitarian relief initiative for people affected and displaced by the recent catastrophic floods in Battar, Nuwakot, in coordination with the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Led by NATTA President Bharat Jung Pandey, the delegation delivered the first consignment of relief materials to the Battar Army Barracks, including food, drinking water, clothing, hygiene and sanitation supplies, shelter-related materials, and other essential necessities.

The initiative represents NATTAโ€™s commitment to supporting communities beyond the tourism sector and providing immediate assistance during times of natural disaster.
