Septic Tank – Loksewa Answer

1. Definition:
A septic tank is an underground wastewater treatment structure where sewage is partially treated by sedimentation and anaerobic digestion.

2. Purpose/Uses:

Treatment of domestic sewage
Separation of solid and liquid waste
Used in areas without sewerage system
Reduces environmental pollution

3. Components:

Inlet pipe
Outlet pipe
Tank (usually RCC)
Baffle walls
Sludge storage zone
Scum layer
Manhole cover
Vent pipe

4. Working Principle:

Sewage enters the tank and solids settle at bottom (sludge)
Lighter materials form scum layer on top
Bacteria decompose organic matter anaerobically
Effluent flows out to soak pit or drain field

5. Advantages:

Simple and low-cost system
Requires less maintenance
Suitable for rural and semi-urban areas
No need of complex sewer network

6. Disadvantages:

Requires periodic cleaning (desludging)
May cause groundwater pollution if poorly designed
Not suitable for high-density urban areas

7. Design Considerations:

Capacity based on number of users
Proper ventilation
Watertight construction
Adequate detention time (usually 24–48 hours)
