Shock in Europe: Viktor Orbán Concedes as Péter Magyar Wins Landslide Victory

Hungary has witnessed a dramatic political تحول, as long-time Prime Minister Viktor Orbán conceded defeat after 16 years in power. Opposition leader Péter Magyar and his centre-right Tisza party secured a projected two-thirds supermajority, marking one of the most significant political upsets in Europe in recent years.

With nearly all votes counted, Tisza is expected to win 138 out of 199 parliamentary seats—enough to reshape the country’s constitution and push forward anti-corruption reforms. Celebrating the victory in Budapest, Magyar told thousands of supporters that Hungary had “reclaimed its future,” as crowds gathered in large numbers following a record voter turnout.

Orbán, known for his nationalist stance and close ties with leaders like Donald Trump, acknowledged the clear result, calling it a painful loss. His defeat is seen as a major shift not just for Hungary, but also for the European Union, potentially changing the country’s stance on key issues like Ukraine support and regional cooperation.

The new parliament is expected to convene within weeks, where Magyar is likely to be formally elected prime minister, signaling a new political era for Hungary.

US President Donald Trump has set a firm condition ahead of a possible agreement with Iran, stating that the country must not possess nuclear weapons under any circumstances. Speaking to reporters while traveling toward Charlottesville, Trump emphasized that a “no nuclear weapons” outcome is the core expectation from any deal, according to BBC.

Trump also said he had wished Vice President JD Vance well before his departure to Islamabad for ceasefire-related talks. He admitted uncertainty over whether negotiations between the US and Iran would conclude quickly or stretch over the coming weeks, suggesting that the process remains unpredictable.

When asked what a “good deal” with Iran would look like, Trump repeated his stance that Iran must remain free of nuclear weapons. He further hinted at what he described as a sense of internal change within Iran, though he did not elaborate in detail.

On regional tensions, Trump assured that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open. Responding to concerns about potential charges on ships passing through the route, he stated that such actions would not be allowed, signaling a strong US position on maintaining free navigation.

The Israeli military confirmed on Thursday that it had killed Ali Yusuf Harshi, the nephew and personal secretary of Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem, in an overnight strike on Beirut. According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the operation specifically targeted Harshi in the Beirut area, eliminating a key member of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group.

The strike marks a significant escalation in tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, as the group has long maintained close ties with Iran and has been involved in multiple conflicts with Israeli forces over the years. While details of the operation remain limited, the IDF emphasized that the strike was precise and aimed at neutralizing a strategic figure within Hezbollah’s inner circle.

Hezbollah has not immediately commented on the attack, but the killing of a close relative of its leader is expected to heighten regional tensions. Analysts warn that such targeted strikes could trigger retaliatory actions by Hezbollah in Lebanon or beyond, further destabilizing the already volatile situation in the region.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed that Iran “begged” for a two-week ceasefire deal with the United States, following a series of devastating strikes targeting its military capabilities. The ceasefire, agreed on Tuesday, came just ahead of the deadline set by President Donald Trump’s threats to hit critical Iranian infrastructure. Hegseth described the strikes as “historic,” claiming that Iran’s missile program, navy, and air force were effectively destroyed, and that the country’s defense industrial base had been razed.

According to Hegseth, Iran’s new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, understood that accepting the ceasefire was preferable to facing further attacks that could have targeted power plants, bridges, and energy infrastructure. The defense secretary emphasized that U.S. forces now control Iranian skies and that the military’s actions had set back Iran’s capabilities in a “historic fashion.”

The ceasefire halts immediate escalation but leaves tensions high, as both sides assess the outcomes of the strikes and the temporary peace agreement.

US and Israeli airstrikes have targeted Iran’s top higher education and research institutions, including Tehran’s Sharif University of Technology, in attacks that Tehran says are aimed at crippling the country’s scientific and technological progress. The bombing destroyed multiple buildings, including an artificial intelligence center that housed critical databases, and forced the university to take its online services offline. University officials claim the strikes were designed to prevent Iran from advancing its AI capabilities, which have been developed domestically due to US sanctions.

No casualties were reported at Sharif University, as classes were being held online, but the attacks mark a continuation of strikes on Iran’s academic and research facilities. Over 30 universities have reportedly been affected since the war began on February 28. Iran’s Ministry of Science and university leaders have condemned the attacks, with some officials urging restraint while others, under pressure from hardline media, are calling for retaliatory measures.

The strikes come amid escalating US threats under President Donald Trump, who has warned of bombing Iran’s critical civilian infrastructure, including power plants, bridges, and factories. Iranian officials argue that the attacks are deliberate attempts to destroy the country’s development and technological progress, affecting millions of citizens and jeopardizing Iran’s long-term growth in science and technology.
