In a recent interview, Chris Hemsworth, the Australian actor and heartthrob who rose to international fame for his role as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed that he's scaling back his career due to a personal health concern. Specifically, Hemsworth learned that he has a high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease later in life, and he's decided to take steps to reduce that risk.
However, Hemsworth was quick to clarify that he's not retiring from acting altogether. Instead, he's simply going to slow down his work schedule and be more selective about the projects he takes on. In his words, "It's not a retirement announcement by any means. It's more about being conscious of the amount of work that I'm doing and the stress that I'm putting myself under, and how that could contribute to the onset of this illness."
Alzheimer's disease is a progressive brain disorder that affects memory, thinking, and behavior. It's the most common cause of dementia, and there's currently no cure. While the exact cause of Alzheimer's is unknown, genetics, lifestyle factors, and environmental factors are believed to play a role. Hemsworth's family history puts him at a higher risk of developing the disease, and he's taking steps to reduce that risk.
