Monsoon rains triggered the collapse of a waste pile at a closed jade mining site in Hpakant, Kachin State, Myanmar, on Sunday (6/28/2026). The incident killed at least five people, while 15 others are still reported missing.

The unstable pile of mining leftovers from heavy rain suddenly slid down and buried loose jade hunters who were sweeping the site. Search teams are still trying to carry out evacuation amid dangerous terrain.

Fatal accidents at Myanmar mines are common, especially during the rainy season. The jade industry in this region has come under the spotlight due to a lack of regulation, and has become a battleground for factions fighting over funding in the post-2021 coup civil war.
