The Internet Service Providers Association of Nepal (ISPAN) has said it will take until Friday evening to fully block 26 unregistered social media platforms after receiving directives from the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.
ISPAN President Sudhir Parajuli said a technical committee is being formed to implement the shutdown, which cannot be completed immediately. He added that ISPs had earlier recommended regulating platforms rather than imposing a blanket ban.
The ban, based on a Supreme Court order and government decisions, covers major platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, and X (Twitter), along with several others.

The Government of Nepal has instructed the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA) to deactivate 26 social media platforms that have not registered with the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. The decision affects some of the world’s biggest platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and YouTube.
The crackdown follows a Supreme Court directive and a Cabinet decision requiring all social media companies to register in Nepal within a specified deadline. The one-week grace period, announced on Bhadra 9 (August 25, 2025), has now expired without compliance from the companies.
Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi S***a Gurung confirmed that the ban will be enforced immediately, stating that the move is aimed at bringing global digital platforms under Nepal’s regulatory framework, ensuring accountability, and addressing concerns over misuse, data security, and user safety.
According to the ministry, while major platforms such as Facebook, X, and YouTube face restrictions, apps like TikTok and Viber remain unaffected, as they have already completed their registration in Nepal.
