Important 🙏
Why is circumambulation (parikrama) done clockwise in Buddhism?

In the Buddhist tradition, even while chanting with a mala (prayer beads), the beads are rotated counter-clockwise.

A circle of devotion: How Buddhist circumambulation transforms life perspective
Have you ever noticed? When we visit a Buddhist monastery or walk around a stupa, why do we always go in the same direction? Specifically, why do we move in the direction of the clock’s hands (clockwise)?

This seemingly simple act—circumambulation—is not merely a physical movement. It is a deep expression of mindfulness, devotion, and our connection to the universe. In Buddhism, its meaning lies in direction and practice, and understanding it fills your mind with reverence and awe.

Traditional Circumambulation in Buddhism:

In Buddhist culture, it is called “Pradakshina”, a Sanskrit word derived from ‘pra’ (forward) and ‘dakshina’ (right). It means to move forward keeping the sacred object to your right. This direction carries symbolic meaning: “to circle three or more times around a sacred object keeping it to your right.”

It is not just a physical act—it is a reaffirmation of faith, remembrance, and intention.

Why clockwise? (The Buddhist meaning of pradakshina):

In Buddhism, clockwise circumambulation is practiced for the following deeper reasons:

1. Expression of devotion and humility:
We keep the sacred object (like a stupa, statue of Buddha, relic, or scripture) to our right, which symbolizes high respect and humility.

2. Remembrance of the Three Jewels:
Each circumambulation reminds us of the Three Jewels—Buddha (enlightenment), Dharma (teachings), and Sangha (the virtuous community).

3. Purification of karma and accumulation of merit:
According to the Buddha’s words, countless merits are accumulated through circumambulation. It brings peace, intellectual progress, and spiritual welfare in this and future lives.

4. Rhythm of the universe and cosmic harmony:
The clockwise direction aligns with the natural flow of the universe—like the movement of the sun, moon, and planets. Following this flow is a symbolic synchronization with the cosmos.

5. Practice of Buddha’s followers:
Numerous sutras mention that after Buddha’s Parinirvana, circumambulating stupas or shrines was a way of showing reverence.

When and why is the counter-clockwise direction (anti-clockwise) used?

Although clockwise is the norm, there are specific circumstances in Buddhism when counter-clockwise circumambulation is practiced:

1. In Ta***ic traditions:
In Vajrayana Buddhism, during powerful ta***ic practices, counter-clockwise circumambulation can symbolize the control of spiritual energy, removal of spiritual obstacles, or liberation from delusion and illusion.

2. To dissolve attachment to the past:
Some specific meditative practices involve going against the traditional flow to symbolize the breaking of inner ignorance.

Death and counter-clockwise circumambulation in Buddhist tradition:

1. Funeral Processions:
In Vajrayana Buddhism, while taking the deceased to the cremation ground, the body is moved counter-clockwise. This symbolizes that the cycle of physical life has ended and the being is departing the worldly cycle. In some regions, the body is circumambulated three times around the pyre in a counter-clockwise direction, signifying farewell to the soul and the end of attachment.

2. Ta***ic deity practices:
While invoking wrathful or fierce deities (like Palden Lhamo, Mahakala, or Ekajati), counter-clockwise circumambulation is practiced to summon their destructive but protective powers.

Is using counter-clockwise direction in normal worship really considered inauspicious?

In Buddhism, the concept of "inauspicious" is not as clearly defined as in Hinduism. Instead of focusing on “auspicious or inauspicious,” Buddhism emphasizes karma and its consequences. However, in general rituals and devotional practices, the counter-clockwise direction is avoided because it is associated with destruction, transformation, or the ending of a life cycle.

Meaning of direction in chanting with a mala:

While chanting, the mala (prayer beads) is moved counter-clockwise. This is not contradictory to circumambulation because chanting with the mala focuses on inner purification, personal transformation, and mindfulness toward enlightenment. Hence, the reversed motion indicates the inward journey of spiritual awakening.

Practice of circumambulation at Buddhist sites:

1. Swayambhunath Stupa:
Thousands of devotees walk clockwise around this historic stupa in Kathmandu every day. It is believed that each round equals walking the entire path of Buddha's teachings.

2. Boudhanath Stupa:
The circumambulation path here is a deeply mindful practice. People chant, walk with calm focus, and transform each step into a meditative journey.

Symbolic story:

According to the Sutta Pitaka, during the time of the Buddha, a disciple once asked,
“Lord, I want to circumambulate the stupa of the Buddha. What benefit does it bring?”
The Buddha replied,
“If one circumambulates with a pure heart and devotion, they will gain favorable results across countless lifetimes.”

Personal experience:

Many of us remember—when we were children, we used to go to the monastery with our parents or teachers and walk around the stupa three times. Back then, we thought of it as just a “ritual.”

But now we understand—we were connecting ourselves with something greater, purer, and more enlightened. Through the act of circumambulation, we were placing our ego, desires, and self-centeredness around the center of Buddhahood.

Final reflection—The deeper meaning of circumambulation:

1. It is not a movement of the body, but a rotation of the mind.

2. The direction is not merely geographic, but a pathway to discover the center of consciousness.

3. The clockwise direction represents flow in alignment with creation.

4. The counter-clockwise direction is a bold spiritual journey toward inner awakening.

For your next journey:

1. The next time you circumambulate a stupa, monastery, scripture, or sacred object—don’t just move your body, move your mind, love, and purity as well.

2. With each step, remind yourself—“I am taking one more step on the path to enlightenment.” That circumambulation will become a sacred journey for you.

३) घडीको सुईको दिशा हो सृष्टिको अनुरूप बहाव;

Kami Rita Sherpa ,
a Legendary Sherpa, was born on 17th January, 1970 in Thame Village, Solu Khumbu Region of Nepal. Thame is also the village of Legendary Tenzing Norgay. He has reached the summit of Mt.Everest 30 times.😲

Kami Rita has been a guide for more than two decades now who had first summited Everest in 1994 during a commercial expedition. During these 29 years, he has scaled five 8,000-metre peaks, summiting them 44 times.

He has also scaled the world’s second-highest mountain, K-2, in Pakistan. Kami Rita Sherpa is a Nepali Sherpa guide who, since May 2023 has held the record for most ascents to the summit of Mount Everest. He scaled the mountain for 30th time (twice) in May 2023, eclipsing his record set on 17th May, 2023. His father was among the first professional Sherpa guides after Everest was opened to foreign mountaineers in 1950. His brother, Lakpa Rita Sherpa, also a guide, scaled Everest 17 times.“I can climb for a few more years,” said Kami Rita Sherpa some time ago in a BBC interview. “I am healthy. I can go until I am 60 years old. With oxygen it’s no big deal, we were born in the Himalayas.” Once Kami Rita told the BBC. “I never thought about making records. I actually didn’t know that you could make a record. Had I known, I would have done a lot more summits earlier.”

Kami Rita has retained his humility towards Mount Everest. For the Sherpas, Chomolungma, as they call it, is a sacred mountain on which a goddess lives. “Months before I begin an ascent, I start worshiping and asking for her forgiveness because I have to put my feet on her body. Right before the final steps to the summit, others run to take photos but I bow my head again and ask for her forgiveness,” says Kami Rita Sherpa. “No matter how strong you are, how good you prepare, you have to be blessed by God to reach the top. In addition to his Everest completions, his total includes Cho-Oyu eight times, three times on Manaslu, and both Lhotse and K2 once each.
