Get ready for the biggest festival of Dolpo!

འབྲུག་ལོ་ (Druk-Lo), Shey Festival is celebrated every 12 years in the year of the Dragon (Druk-Lo) according to the Buddhist lunar calendar in Shey Gompa, Upper Dolpo. The upcoming festitval will be held from བོད་རྒྱལ་ལོ་ ༢༠༥༡ བོད་ཟླ་དྲུག་པ་རྗེས་མའི་ཚེས་ ༡༤ ནས་ ཚེས་ ༡༧ བར་ August 18-21, 2024. (Bhadra 02-05, 2081) It will be organized collaboratively by the people of Dolpo and Shey-Festival Organizing Committee.

Brief History Shey or Shey Gompa

Shey or Shey Gompa are sacred pilgrimage sites in Upper Dolpo, Nepal. Ribo DrugTa, also called The Crystal Mountain, has legendary connections to Buddhism.

Located north of Phoksundo Lake at 4160m elevation, Shey is the spiritual heart of Dolpo. Shey is also a habitat for Himalayan wildlife like snow leopards and blue sheep. As a holy site and national park, hunting is prohibited.

According to legend, 1000 years ago Buddhist ascetic Gyamgon Rimpoche sent his disciple Drutop Shinge Yeshe to explore Shey. Drutop Shinge Yeshe subdued the fierce mountain spirit and transformed it into the pure Shey Ribo DrugTa or Crystal Mountain. During annual kora pilgrimages, Dolpo people circumambulate Shey Ribo DrugTa or Crystal Mountain.

There are three ancient monasteries in Shey - Komoche, Tsakhang, and Shey Sumdo.

Komoche is where Drutop Shinge Yeshe meditated and attained enlightenment. His relics are kept in a cave there.

Dolpo is a region in western Nepal, known for its rugged and remote landscape, ancient Buddhist monasteries, and unique culture. The people of Dolpo, also known as Dolwo, have lived in this region for centuries and have adapted to the harsh living conditions.

Being a Dolpo means living a simple and sustainable lifestyle, relying on traditional farming methods and animal husbandry to survive. The Dolpo-pa are also known for their strong spiritual beliefs and devotion to Tibetan Buddhism, evident in their daily practices and festivals.

Despite the challenges of living in a remote and isolated region, the Dolpo have managed to preserve their unique cultural heritage and traditions. They have a rich oral history, with stories passed down through generations, and their handicrafts, such as woolen textiles and pottery, are highly prized.

However, the Dolpo region faces many challenges, including limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Climate change and environmental degradation are also threatening their traditional way of life. As a result, many young Dolpo is leaving the region in search of better opportunities.

Overall, being a Dolpo is a way of life that is deeply rooted in tradition and spirituality, but also faces modern challenges that require adaptation and innovation.
