Later today, hundreds of devotees will gather to pull it down using thick ropes—a dramatic ritual symbolizing the destruction of "serpent" enemies and the casting away of last year’s misfortunes.

The excitement doesn't stop there. Once the pole touches the earth this evening, the chariots of Lord Bhairav and Goddess Bhadrakali will be pulled to Ga:hiti for their legendary "collision" ceremony, known as Dyo Lwakigu.
