Desert memories flying CSAR training missions in Kuwait after the first Gulf War. Exploring gutted bunkers hit by A-10s, shooting up abandoned tanks, and taking pictures near tanks and camels before a not-so-friendly pursuit changed the plan. Those who were there know exactly what I’m talking about.

1995 . Six months deployed aboard the USS Constellation.

Taken from my TSO seat in an SH-60F as our HS-2 squadron launched off the carrier and headed home in formation to NAS North Island. Best flight of WestPac!

This scene found its way into my military thriller, Bloodline of Redemption. But that flight in the book was diverted to San Clemente to meet with officials after an incident with the crew at sea.

15 years ago today — May 15, 2011 — I stood alone on the summit of Mount Everest at 29,035 feet.

Shortly after reaching the summit, I went completely snow blind. The descent was a fight to survive one slow step at a time.

I witnessed a miracle up there in the Death Zone. I wouldn’t be here otherwise.

Every day is a gift. Take advantage of the time you have.
