HLF-WWW 2027 Welcomes Susanne Gervay OAM

We are delighted to announce Susanne Gervay OAM, award-winning Australian author, educator and passionate advocate for social justice and literacy, as a featured guest at Himalayan Literature Festival & Writers’ Workshop 2027.

A recipient of the Lifetime Social Justice Literature Award from the International Literacy Association and the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for her contribution to children’s literature, Susanne’s powerful writing engages with multiculturalism, disability, inclusion, peace, bullying and the rights of young people.

An internationally acclaimed speaker, she has addressed audiences from New York and Delhi to Istanbul, Singapore, Ubud and communities across Australia. She is also a literacy advocate, Room to Read ambassador and Patron of Monkey Baa Theatre.

A very moving talk yesterday with the wonderful students of St. Xavier’s, discussing poetry, HLF-WWK 2027, and the future of writing amid the growing challenges and possibilities of Artificial Intelligence.

Their thoughtful questions and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. We spoke about creativity, imagination, and what it means to remain human in an increasingly AI-driven world.

Grateful to the students and faculty for such a meaningful conversation. The future of writing is in good hands.

HLF–WWK 2027 Welcomes Mike Jurkovic

The Himalayan Literature Festival & Writers' Workshop (HLF–WWK) 2027 is delighted to welcome Mike Jurkovic (USA), the 2025–2027 Ulster County Poet Laureate, as a featured visting writer for the festival.

An acclaimed American poet, haiku master, broadcaster, jazz critic, and literary arts advocate, Mike Jurkovic has long been a vibrant presence in the contemporary poetry community. His forthcoming collection, Circling Planes (Bushwhack Books, 2026), follows his acclaimed volumes Buckshot Reckoning, mooncussers, and AmericanMental, as well as his celebrated haiku collections Monet's Bamboo and Blue Fan Whirring, published by Nirala Press.

A 2016 Pushcart Prize nominee, Mike serves as President of the Calling All Poets Series, one of New York State's longest-running literary reading series, and co-chairs the Music Fan Film Series at the Rosendale Theatre. He is also a respected jazz critic for All About Jazz and hosts the long-running radio programme NuJazzXcursions on WVKR-FM at Vassar College.

At HLF–WWK 2027, Mike will share his rich experience in poetry, haiku, music, and the creative process through readings, conversations, and workshops, offering participants a rare opportunity to engage with one of America's distinctive contemporary literary voices.
