We are thrilled to welcome Luís Filipe Sarmento to 2026 Himalayan Literature Festival in Kathmandu !
Born in Lisbon in 1956, Sarmento is one of Portugal’s most dynamic literary voices—writer, journalist, translator, filmmaker, and teacher of Writing, Modernisms, and Aesthetics. His work has been translated into 20+ languages, and he pioneered Portugal’s first Videobook for RTP’s Acontece.
A longtime leader in global literary organizations, he has served with the World Poetry Movement, P.E.N. Club, Organization Mondial de Poétes, and the Ibero-American Writers’ Association.
His acclaimed career has earned major honors, including the Balsa de Piedra Prize, Cesar Vallejo International Prize, Ulysses Literary Prize, and Clarice Lispector Literature Prize.
Author of 36 books—from The Age of Fire (1975) to Acid (2024) and The Boy with the Elephant (2025)—Sarmento continues to shape contemporary world literature.

Delighted to welcome American Poet Bob Whelan to the Himalayan Literature Festival 2026 in Kathmandu!

Robert Whelan is the founder and organizer of the Rockport International Poetry Festival and serves as the Poet Laureate of Rockport, Massachusetts.

In 2022, he received a Silver Medal at the Naoussa International Poetry Festival for his contribution to the Advancement of World Poetry. His poems have appeared in numerous anthologies and journals, and he is a beloved voice at open mics across Boston, New England, and internationally.

Most recently, in 2025, Bob’s poetry was included in the Lunar Codex, a NASA project that sent poetry and art to the surface of the Moon, creating a digital archive for future space explorers.

We look forward to celebrating poetry among the Himalayas with such a remarkable voice!

We are delighted to welcome Colorado poet and educator Kathleen Willard to the festival. Her poetry explores landscapes, spirituality, and ecology with luminous clarity. Willard is the author of Cirque & Sky, This Incendiary Season, The Next Noise Is Our Hearts, and Electric Grace. Her forthcoming collection, A World on Fire, will be published by Nirala Publications in New Delhi in Spring 2026.
A recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Fellowship to India and a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship, she has attended the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference and the Disquiet International Literary Festival in Lisbon. Willard has also held residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Breckenridge Creative Arts, and Mission Street Arts in New Mexico.
She holds degrees from Windham College, Middlebury College, and Colorado State University, and publishes an online newsletter, Occasional Papers.
