North Korea launched about ten ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan on Saturday, according to the South Korean military's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). This significant military action comes as global attention is focused elsewhere, suggesting Pyongyang seeks to assert its presence. South Korea's military confirmed its readiness to respond strongly to any further provocations from the North, signaling heightened alert levels across the region.
The missiles departed from North Korea's Sunan area around 1:20 PM, traveling approximately 350 kilometers before landing in the water. This event follows recent discussions about potential high-level talks between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un regarding denuclearization efforts. North Korea has recently indicated that reconciliation is possible only if the US accepts its nuclear status, setting a clear condition for dialogue.
Experts suggest North Korea often uses military tests to draw international focus when global security concerns shift, such as to the Middle East conflict. As a nuclear-armed state, Pyongyang views US-led military exercises as aggressive acts. This latest launch maintains the long-standing tension on the Korean Peninsula and complicates ongoing, albeit stalled, diplomatic efforts.
