💥INTRODUCING THE TEAM

PAGAN RIMENE

Pagan is from Alexandra, born in Clyde Central Otago in August of ‘88’ in the heart of the busiest shearing region in New Zealand during winter, A classic shed baby was born.

Raised around sheep her whole life with her father breaking world records and her mother a world champion wool handler, the opportunities to learn both disciplines was not passed up.

The focus for many years to become a master wool handler and world champion was finally completed in 2018 and 2019; she has since made her focus on shearing full time and training her
mind and body.

Pagan has spent 20 years under the strict competition rules and the eyes of judges competing nationally and internationally in shearing and wool handling with success in both disciplines.
Representing NZ multiple times. Pagan won the first women shearing event in the shearing capital of NZ against world record holders in 2019 the same year she was awarded rural sports woman of the year and the same year she became a team world champion up against tough competition of 36 countries.
She also spent time doing speed shears in Australia with the quickest time of 28 sec a sheep, she has won more than 50 titles in the open class for wool handling around the world and NZ, these include every breed and wool type available.

Some highlights for Pagan's shearing career have been, with a main goal to show shear more than 400 lambs in a standard 8-hour day. She has been successful many times, with a top tally of 421 on
strong wool lambs, 389 on merino lambs, placing 5th in the senior shearing world championships in 2017 in Invercargill, placing 3rd in the women's world shearing champs in France.
Having achieved every goal, she has ever set in front of her with the aim of shearing to her absolute potential.

Her hobbies include shearing sheep, adventures
with her pooch & Family, exploring our beautiful country and learning to carve pounamu.

A WOOL HANDLERS DAY IN CENTRAL:

Watching them work, I can’t help but be in awe of these women’s strength, skill and coping abilities, extended focus and smooth teamwork. Many athletes would struggle to cope with just one day in their place. A wool handler’s fitness is on a different level, and their resilience in the face of adversity and challenging conditions is remarkable.

I followed my daughter around for a bit and then worked out what she and her workmates each completed that day, as well as any other day.

(This is an estimate of course, on a flat board. On a raised board as in the video, the squats are replaced by reaches instead)

1) 15-20 kilometres walk per workday in a stop-start situation: Walk fast for about 5 metres, then stop, change direction, squat down for a fleece pickup, etc.
2) 250 full squats or deadlifts to pick up a fleece of about 4-7kg.
3) 250 full squats or deadlifts and hold that position leaning forward to prepare the fleece.
4) 750 full squats or deadlifts to sort oddments.
5) 250 full squats or deadlifts to pick up and sort each belly.
6) 250 inclined bench presses to throw the fleece at 4-7 kg.
7) 3500 light band pull aparts skirting the fleece.
8)3000 punches and pulls across the body sweeping and sorting oddments with the broom.

9) All this is done under time pressure, and with performance stress put on them by the speed of the shearer and the expectation of the farmer and wool classer. The decision making is lightning fast, they are in a constant state of hyperfocus and have the eye of an eagle to spot and pick out the different types of wool.
Of course, a lot of their work is automated and done in flow. Depending on the wool clip preparation, the intensity varies.

In summary these are the basic actions to be completed inside 8 hours on a flat board and with fine wool sheep. All performed under duress and an expectancy of accuracy and perfect timing to ensure smooth workflow.

15-20 kilometers walk in 5-metre intervals.
1500 squats or deadlifts, some with weight.
250 inclined bench presses at
3500 light band 3000 punches across the body.
