Australian Zac Hurren, currently tutoring at the University of Auckland, brings his reflective Antipodean flavour to our shores. He talked about expressing his internal musings to us through his instrument, and this was adeptly achieved with improvisational soliloquies, duets and with the quartet. Some nice dual sax interplays with Iggy Nama Ruci, and Wil Goodinson was a standout for me.
Ato is an eclectic, intimate space filled with art and industrial hardware, where the hanging lawnmower doesn’t feel out of place at all. It’s the secret speakeasy in the suburbs with superb acoustics.
