Three-time Emmy nominee Melanie Lynskey (Yellow Jackets, The Last of Us) and acclaimed NZ actress Robyn Malcolm (Top of the Lake, After the Party) star as Anna Osborne and Sonya Rockhouse; two ordinary women who lost their loved ones in the 2010 Pike River Mine explosion, and become leading voices in the families’ fight for truth and accountability.

One of the recurring themes from the recent Safeguard HOP Conference was “Work As Done” often referred to as everyday work or regular work. Leaders play an important part in determining whether the gap between Work As Imagined and Work As Done is seen as a Threat or an Opportunity. This lens will drive organisational decision making across Work Design, Critical Risks and Worker Engagement.

NZISM's "Close the Gap" workshop roadshow starts in less than a week and in it Brent Sutton will be considering - amongst other things - the role that Safety Practitioners play in positioning “Work As Done” as an opportunity to learn and improve.

We're really excited to let you know that in just 2 weeks we're kicking off a powerful new roadshow with Brent Sutton, developed to help you close the gap between perception and reality - and strengthen safety where it matters most.

It's crucial to understand how work is done 'at the coalface' rather than building capability and priorities around senior leadership's understanding of what should be going on. All too often there is a gap between the two - and as we know from 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝑵𝒆𝒘 𝒁𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒗 𝑮𝒊𝒃𝒔𝒐𝒏, the consequences of that gap can be tragic.

At this new workshop, Brent will work with members to identify the ideas, resources and techniques available to help you close the gap and start prioritising the risks that truly matter.

We will be visiting 15 locations around the motu throughout October, November & December.

Su***de remains a significant issue in New Zealand, with rates far exceeding workplace fatalities. Many of those who die by su***de are actively employed, with the construction industry reporting the highest rates.

In this week's webinar author and professional speaker, Michael Hempseed, will explore the latest research on su***de prevention in the workplace, including emerging trends, risk factors, and vulnerable groups.

You'll gain practical insights into:

✔️ The strong connection between sleep issues and su***de risk
✔️ How to recognise warning signs and approach someone who may be struggling
✔️ Referral pathways and where to direct someone for help
✔️ Responding to a su***de in the workplace
✔️ Evidence-based strategies employers can implement to reduce risk and support their workforce

This webinar is designed for anyone involved in workplace wellbeing, HR, health and safety, or leadership roles who wants to better understand how to create safer, more supportive working environments.

The New Zealand Institute of Safety Management (NZISM), the professional association for health and safety experts, is concerned by the prospect of more lax machine guarding requirements signalled by the Minister for Workplace Relations and Safety.

"Machines that are badly guarded are a major source of workplace harm. Nearly 200 hard-working New Zealanders are killed, hurt and maimed every year (according to the latest full year WorkSafe data) by improperly guarded machines. Simplifying machine guarding requirements in a way that lowers standards will lead to more deaths and injuries," said NZISM spokesperson, Mike Cosman.

"We agree with the Minister that guidance needs to be updated, made more specific to particular sectors and easier to understand and we’re happy to help with this. Proper guarding is not a simple one-size-fits all given the massive range of equipment and situations in which it is used across the country.

"There is a strong role for health and safety experts (like NZISM members) in giving that advice. You wouldn't ask a Police Officer to design the brakes on your truck and you can't expect WorkSafe to act as your consultant. If you use machinery you need to take steps to satisfy yourself that it will keep your workers safe."
