Matakīrea is a three-day wānanga designed to develop the next generation of mātanga reo Māori in the art of waiata composition. Led by Ruth Smith, emerging language experts were paired with artists to collaborate, create, and explore what it takes to write waiata reo Māori for contemporary audiences.

The result: new waiata, new connections, and a growing community of mātanga reo supporting the future of Māori music.

Nine new waiata were born in that room, that’s pretty special 💌🎶

Still buzzing from the Aotearoa Music Awards ✨ and waiata reo Māori was at the centre of it all.

For many years we've talked about the rise of waiata reo Māori. But this movement is no longer on the come up. Waiata reo Māori and kaiwaiata Māori are at the forefront, helping shape and lead the music industry here in Aotearoa.

Numerous nominations and award wins, incredible performances, and te reo Māori flowing naturally throughout the night - a reminder of how far we've come.
