Sri Lanka's New Animal Welfare Bill: Tougher Laws to Protect Our Wildlife Assets and Furry babies
🌸 Up to Rs. 250,000 fine and 2 years in jail for acts like beating, kicking, torturing, overloading, abandoning or poisoning animals
🌸 Keeping animals in cramped cages or denying food, water and shelter now punishable under the law
🌸 Harsher penalties for severe crimes: up to Rs. 500,000 fine and 3-4 years jail for cruel killing or harming pregnant animals
🌸 Bans on cruel traps, tying birds painfully, unqualified surgeries, and cosmetic testing on animals
🌸 Sport hunting, animal fights, baiting and shooting matches completely prohibited, owners allowing these on their property also face action
🌸 Pet shops and breeders must get licenses; street sales and selling pets to under-16s banned
🌸 Strict new rules for animal transport with proper vehicles, space, food and rest. Violations up to Rs. 300,000 fine
🌸 Police can arrest without warrant; Animal Welfare Officers empowered to help animals in need
🌸 New Advisory Committee to oversee implementation and replace the old 100-year-old law
