This morning I called in to see Phil and picked up a couple of new Hexa chains to try… I was genuinely excited to have a crack.
The verdict is holy s**t, think hot knife through butter…
I had a go at sharpening with the new Hexa file and that seemed pretty easy also. I’m impressed.

I had the best day ever yesterday. After an early start I headed to the far north, destination Haruru Falls, Paihia. The tide was in, there was no wind and the smell in the air suggested there was a serious bbq competition in play.
Ken from .b.o.i was hosting some of this countries top bbq teams in his home patch aptly call Te Tai Tokerau Low and Slow. What an event.
I could only stay for the first day which was a bummer but I made the most it eating some great bbq and catching up with friends.
Alex Lawson host of the NZ Podcast BBQ Base and captain of the illustrious team had the cook of his life and was named Grand Champion with Ced Newton from claiming Reserve Grand Champion.

Friends, New Zealand Pecan, it’s a real thing, and man is it good!
Pecan is from the Hickory family and is one of, if not the most popular and sought after woods in America. It has the most incredible smell when placed on the coals, not dissimilar to popping corn and it goes with just about anything.
Sourcing this beautiful wood was an adventure to Northland and a day with bbq icon Ken van Legend. His energy, positivity and friendship always leaves me smiling.

I always get a buzz when I bag wood that is finished and ready to go. The process is long but incredibly rewarding.
It’s no secret that among all the woods we do, Pohutukawa is my absolute favourite. It’s great to process, it dries well, it smells amazing and when using it to bbq with, it goes with pretty much anything.
This is a staple you absolutely must have in your bbq armoury 😊.

So much damage, so many lives in turmoil… sending love to the people of Gisborne, Hawkes Bay and the West Coast of Auckland.
Today I tried to turn the negative into something positive down the track with this huge English Oak which came to rest on a house in Northcote.

I had the privilege to be up close and personal with the legend, Big Moe Cason yesterday at BBQ Central Lunn Ave. All the famous guys from Cooks on Fire were there too, Greg Hart, Wayne Dill and Steven Cook.
Moe laid down a special masterclass on brisket, pork butt and ribs, which was entertaining, interactive and full of stories and humour.
He’ll be here for a week touring our ‘sunny’ Isles, culminating in headlining the Que and Brew Festival at Mt Smart Stadium next weekend.

Friends is hard to believe it’s February already. January has been catastrophic for Auckland in regards to the unseasonal rain fall making it very difficult to get you dry wood.

As you’ll see I’ve just bought an extraordinarily expensive rain gauge which tells a sorry story of very little bbq action in the Grace household…

Creating content under pressure this Boxing Day… even a flash thunder storm wasn’t enough to put me off tonight, it did make it hard to light though.
We had an epic night by the bonfire. My niece Emma lit a small marshmallow fire which grew into an apocalypse later in the night.

I had a super fun morning with the legend Mr Wayne Dill aka Team Bbqwar showing that it is completely possible to build something really super cool from nothing. Stay tuned to see Frankenstein.

Getting to watch the man in his element is a real treat. Welding, grinding and bending pipes are things I see as impossible; not so here is this realm.

Gidday Friends

I can’t believe where the back half of 2022 has gone! With two weeks to Christmas I am pinching myself.

2022 has been an incredible year for us. As some of you know, we have just been picked up by Mitre 10, New Zealand’s favourite home hardware chain. You’ll now find our staple range of bbq chunks; Pohutukawa, Oak, Manuka and Apple from Invercargill to Kaitaia.

As a family we’re very humbled and excited with this opportunity and are looking forward to 2023 with relish (and lots of bbq sauce!).
