A study commissioned by the Pacific Island Food Revolution has produced evidence of some transformative results on what and how much people are eating.

The Pacific region has some of the highest rates of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the world -- in Tonga, more than 90 per cent of adults are obese there are more than 1000 heart disease deaths a year in Fiji.

But the Pacific Island Food Revolution (PIFR), which features 24 cooks from several Pacific countries who compete against each other, is trying to promote local, healthy food in the Pacific to combat the NCD crisis.

A study commissioned by PIFR, by the Busara Center for Economics, has found that 42 per cent of people who engaged with the TV show have reported a positive change in their diets over the past year.

New Zealand Tongan Melissa Takai started watching the show last year and has felt that impact.

"It inspired me to take up healthier eating and get in touch with my Tongan food roots," she said.

The show's communications and partnerships manager Wame Valentine said addressing unhealthy eating has been their key mission since launching two years ago.

"It's more than just a show."

But can a reality TV show really affect that much change?

Queensland University of Technology Dr Katherine Kirkwood has studied the impact of food media for almost decade and in particular has tracked the influence of Australia's MasterChef cooking show and she said they can.

"With MasterChef, we tracked the perception of things like butter, because they were in high end dishes we've seen people change their idea of it being bad to being tasty... similar to what we see in the PFR report with local food."

But University of Wollongong Associate Professor Bridget Kelly said that more action is needed at a political level for the changes to really stick.

"You need to put policies in place to stop unhealthy food advertisements," she said.

Gotta love these guys - something for the little ones during lockdown.

Hi everyone,
Following the news of the lockdown, Morgan and I have put our brains together to do a series of ocean themed lessons for primary aged children. Morgan is a primary teacher who specialises in science and technology.
If you are interested in some home learning about our Moana for the kids during the lockdown, we will be posting a daily lesson on our page at 10am for the next week. The lessons will explore different creatures, ocean zones, sustainability and kid friendly recipes.

Stay safe 👍

The Pacific Island Food Revolution TV show is increasing people's uptake of healthy food, a new impact assessment report has found.

The program commissioned the Busara Center for Behavioral Economics to do the assessment in Fiji, Tonga, Vanuatu, and Samoa.

The report found that watching and engaging with the show was responsible for an 'an excess improvement' on average of 33 per cent in Fiji, 38 per cent in Vanuatu, 146 per cent in Samoa, and 262 per cent in Tonga.

Simona Achitei the Grants and Program Manager for the show said the program was trying a new development model to address the increasing rates of NCD’s.

“If you watch it the more you’re likely to report a healthier diet… the more you watch it the more you engage the more you’re likely to have a larger shift towards healthier eating," she told the ABC's Pacific Beat.
