Could an AI-generated selfie with a Bollywood star get you into trouble? It might.
In the past couple of weeks, some of Bollywood's biggest celebrities have sought to legally protect their "personality rights". The list includes director Karan Johar, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and her husband and actor Abhishek Bachchan.
Personality rights, also called publicity rights, refer to a person's right to benefit, commercially or otherwise, from their identity or persona. This includes the person's name, image, voice, mannerisms or even a catchphrase or gesture that's unique to them.
These rights also protect a person's identity from being misused or commercially exploited, and do not extend beyond the individual.
So, a celebrity can profit from their fame by endorsing a product for a fee, but their image cannot be used by another person to promote a product without consent.
India does not have a dedicated law protecting personality rights, so judges defer to common law - which are laws developed by judges by applying legal principles - to decide on cases. This is different from some states in the US, like California - home to Hollywood - where publicity rights are protected under statutory law.
These rights are routinely violated in India, where it is common for small businesses and shops to use images of Bollywood celebrities for promotional purposes.
In their pleas to the Delhi High Court, Bollywood celebrities have raised concerns about their identities being misused for unauthorised merchandising, creation of fake profiles and websites, and for making obscene AI-generated content among other things.
The courts have upheld their personality rights and directed the defendants and related platforms to remove the unlawful content.
This isn't the first time that celebrities have gone to court over the issue.
In 2023, Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor sued several websites and platforms for commercially exploiting his name, image, voice as well as the catchphrase "jhakaas" (the Marathi word for awesome) which came to be associated with him after he used it in one of his films.
Last year, the Delhi High Court upheld actor Jackie Shroff's personality rights by prohibiting his name, image and even nicknames from being used without his permission.

A restaurant in Queenstown with spectacular views of Lake Wakatipu is celebrating after coming top of a worldwide Tripadvisor ranking.

Nest Kitchen + Bar has been named the inaugural winner of the ‘One of a Kind’ category at the Travellers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best Restaurants.

The category “celebrates extraordinary restaurants that cannot be found anywhere else, where originality, creativity, and unforgettable flavours make every dining experience truly unique”.
In its review, Tripadvisor said: “Even if great views — and food — are around every corner in New Zealand, they both manage to go to the next level at Nest. Come for the local lamb and the extensive wine list; stay for scenes of Lake Wakatipu.”

It was also listed among the world’s best ‘date night’ restaurants by Tripadvisor.

“It feels more like a fine-dining retreat than a hotel restaurant. The menu celebrates local produce — with standouts including the braised wagyu short rib doughnut and Royalburn Station lamb loin with date-glazed kūmara.

“Breakfast is just as impressive, with spicy Turkish eggs, steak and eggs, and classics like smashed avocado on wholemeal toast.”

A three-course meal costs $115, with the degustation menu at $149. Some of the current offerings include Fiordland red deer loin with venison and Gouda croquette, and a miso-glazed eggplant with crispy Remarkable Fungi oyster mushroom.

A solo mum who was offered more hours at work in return for s*x will received $60,000.

She was struggling with less hours at the bus company she was working for and had requested for more hours at work, the branch manager offered more hours in return for s*x.
The woman initially complied, and the pair had s*x at work and on the buses parked there.
But she was ultimately forced to resign after the workplace stress grew too great and her employer failed to act on her complaints.
Now she has won a s*xual harassment case described as the most serious of its kind and the Human Rights Review Tribunal has ordered the man to pay her $60,000 in damages for humiliation, loss of dignity and injury to feelings.

Wound you do this??

A mobility card holder found this card left on the car wind screen.
A woman had picked up their daughter from school last Monday, before popping into a supermarket in Mosgiel, 15km west of Dunedin, for a few supplies from a supermarket. She had parked in the marked car park but maybe this person was pi**ed off with the way car was parked. These cards can be purchased online for under $20.

India News

The Supreme Court on Wednesday - while hearing a petition challenging the provision under the Hindu Succession Act (HSA) which states that after the death of a childless Hindu widow, her property passes to her husband's family instead of her parents - remarked that when a woman marries under the Hindu Law, her "gotra" also changes.

Justice BV Nagarathna, who is the sole woman judge in the Supreme Court, said that Hindu society has the concept of "Kanyadaan", under which when a woman marries, her "gotra", which refers to a clan or a descendant from a common ancestor, also changes.

She went on to add that the court does not wish that something which has existed for thousands of years gets broken by its decision.

The primary question of law that came up in the top court through several petitions is who inherits a childless Hindu widow's property who dies without a will.

Under the current law, the property is passed on to in-laws and not her maternal family.

The court was informed about a case where a young couple died due to COVID-19. Following which, mothers of the man and woman are fighting a legal battle to inherit what was left behind.

On one hand, the mother of the man claims that she has the right to the entire property of the couple, while the woman's mother wants to inherit her daughter's accumulated wealth and property.

State witness and Fijian Elections Office Manager Legal, Mesake Dawai has stated in the Suva High Court that the Deed of Variations looked like it was falsified as both had the same dates but different signatories.

While giving evidence in the abuse of office case of former Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and former Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem, Dawai said the Deed could not have been signed on the same date.

Dawai says he was instructed by Supervisor of Elections Ana Mataiciwa to investigate certain allegations that were brought up against Saneem.

He says he interviewed staff including Financial Officer, Romika Sewak who says she had kept a copy of the first Deed of Variation to cover herself in case the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service came after her regarding where the money went.

The Manager Legal says during his investigation he also found that Saneem had taken all the other copies of the first Deed of Variation from the other departments like Human Resources.

He says the Financial Controller says Saneem complained to her about all the deductions to his pay which is why the second Deed of Variation came into play.

Dawai says when he enquired with the Constitutional Offices Commission, they said there was no approval from their end for a tax reimbursement.

He also raised that it was very rare for an election official to get a raise on election year.

The Manager Legal says there had been various situations that he has witnessed Saneem allegedly favouring the former FijiFirst Party.

At this point, defence counsel Devanesh Sharma objected saying that the witness did not reveal this in his interview so how are they supposed to counter or research this, calling it an ambush.

Chief Justice Temo says the days of ambush trial or surprises are no longer encouraged like in the past, and this should all have been sorted out beforehand during disclosures adding that all this does bring down the credibility of the witness.

State Prosecutor, Nancy Tikoisuva argued that Dawai has worked with Saneem for a long time and he would know of these incidents.

When asked by Tikoisuva about one of these incidents, Dawai said one of them was when he was called into Saneem’s office in regards to the submission of the declaration of office holders where Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum had submitted their declaration which was not dated.

Dawai says that Saneem told him to date the declaration, to which he objected to, adding that the person that signed it should amend it.

Dawai said Saneem then took a pen and dated it.

When asked by Tikoisuva if there were other instances during the 2022 campaign period, Dawai said it was the placement of former FijiFirst campaign material on the Suva Civic Carpark building, but the laws specifically stated that you can only place campaign materials on places that have been approved by the Supervisor of Elections.

Dawai says the former FijiFirst Party was sent a letter to remove it as was the Suva City Council, but a letter was not sent to FICAC even though a breach had taken place.

He says even though Saneem is empowered by law to direct political candidates to remove campaign materials, it does not change the fact that Section 18 of the Electoral Act states that if the Electoral Commission or the Supervisor becomes aware of the probable commission of an election related criminal offence prescribed in this Act, it must immediately report the matter in writing to FICAC.
