Residents in Wellington’s south coast and coastal areas of Wairarapa are being urged to "take the necessary precautions" ahead of large swells expected to hit the region today. Civil Defence has ordered residents in waterfront properties in Ōwhiro Bay, Island Bay, Houghton Bay and Breaker Bay to evacuate by 9am today, warning after that time it may be too dangerous to leave their properties. Ferry sailings have been cancelled, while road closures are likely and public transport users are being warned their routes may be affected. Swells are predicted to reach up to 10.5 meters.

The woman who lost her life in a crash in Christchurch earlier this year has been identified as 34-year-old Miriata Lee Houkamau of Burnside.

Police are continuing their investigation into the single-vehicle crash, which occurred on Grahams Road in Burnside on April 27. Over the weekend, officers renewed their appeal for information as they work to identify a potential witness captured near the scene.

CCTV footage showed a white vehicle in the area at the time of the crash, however police have so far been unable to determine its registration number and are asking anyone with information to come forward.
