Ajit Doval Meets China’s Vice President Ahead of Key Border Talks

India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, who is on a two-day visit to China, held talks with Chinese Vice President Han Zheng on Tuesday, focusing on maintaining peace and stability along the India-China border and strengthening bilateral relations.

The meeting comes ahead of the 25th round of Special Representatives’ talks on the India-China boundary question, scheduled for later Tuesday between Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The Embassy of India in China confirmed the meeting in a post on X, stating that Doval, who is also India’s Special Representative on the boundary question, called on Vice President Han Zheng on August 25.

According to the embassy, the two leaders discussed measures to maintain peace and tranquillity in border areas, as well as ways to further improve bilateral ties.

Their discussions also covered cooperation across economic, political and multilateral platforms, in line with the understanding reached between the leaders of India and China.

Doval’s meeting with Wang Yi later Tuesday is expected to build on discussions held between the two officials in June, when they met in New Delhi on the sidelines of the BRICS meeting of National Security Advisers.

The latest talks come as India and China continue diplomatic efforts to stabilise relations and address outstanding issues along their disputed border.

A New Zealand First candidate has resigned following the emergence of screenshots that allegedly show him approaching several political parties in an effort to secure a candidacy.

George Ngatai was announced as a New Zealand First candidate in July and had previously fronted the party’s convention broadcast alongside current MP Jenny Marcroft.

Ngatai had also faced criticism over comments in which he defined a woman as someone who knows “where to shop for clothes and shoes and chocolates.”

His resignation comes after the screenshots surfaced online, raising questions about his attempts to seek a place with different political parties.

India Considers Annual Drug Testing for All Pilots After Air India Incident

India’s Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu says the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is considering mandatory annual drug testing for all pilots as part of efforts to strengthen aviation safety.

Speaking to reporters in Delhi on Tuesday, Naidu said current regulations require drug testing of 10% of pilots across the country’s overall pilot network. However, the DGCA is now consulting industry stakeholders on the possibility of expanding the testing to cover every pilot at least once a year.

Naidu said the proposed testing could be carried out randomly throughout the year.

He stressed that authorities would need to balance aviation safety requirements with the potential operational impact on airlines.

The Minister said the DGCA is assessing how mandatory annual testing could affect airline operations before deciding whether to introduce the broader requirement.

“If implemented, 100% testing would mean every pilot undergoing a drug test at least once a year,” Naidu said, adding that the DGCA is currently developing a strategy to assess the proposal.

The comments follow an incident involving Air India flight AI2379, which was travelling from Phuket to Delhi on August 4 when the aircraft suddenly lost around 300 feet in altitude over Odisha.

Twenty passengers and four cabin crew members were injured in the incident.

The Airbus A320, registered as VT-EXO, later stabilised and continued its journey before landing safely in Delhi. The aircraft was carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, along with eight crew members—two pilots and six cabin crew.

The incident has also drawn attention to a purported post-flight maintenance report, which reportedly recorded several technical warnings involving the aircraft’s hydraulic systems, flight controls and autopilot during the flight.

The DGCA’s consideration of expanded pilot drug testing comes as Indian aviation authorities continue to examine measures aimed at strengthening flight safety and reducing potential risks in commercial aviation.

India Faces Growing Scrutiny Over Food Labelling as Health Concerns Rise

A can of Fanta sold in London contains around 63 calories. But the same brand sold in India contains significantly more sugar—around three times as much—and also includes an artificial colouring agent that would require a prominent health warning on food products in Europe.

In India, however, the presence of the colourant is disclosed only in small print on the back of the can.

The difference has renewed concerns over how multinational food and beverage companies label their products in India, where efforts to introduce prominent nutritional warnings on the front of packaged foods have faced strong opposition from the industry.

Consumer giants such as Coca-Cola, which produces Fanta, could benefit from the regulatory approach. In August, India’s food-safety regulator abandoned a proposal to introduce colour-coded warning labels on the front of packaged food products.

The regulator argued that such labels did not adequately take into account India’s preference for foods with stronger and more intense flavours. Instead, it proposed that manufacturers display a black-and-white nutritional table showing the amount of sugar, fat and salt in their products.

The decision is now being scrutinised by India’s Supreme Court following a petition filed by public health activists.

The debate comes amid growing concerns about obesity and diet-related health problems in India. A recent study published in The Lancet estimates that as many as 450 million Indians could be overweight or obese by 2050.

Health experts argue that clearer and more prominent nutritional information could help consumers make healthier choices and encourage better eating habits.

Around 20 countries have already introduced interpretive front-of-pack labels, which can use simple colour coding or warnings to indicate products that are high in sugar, salt or fat.

However, India’s Food Safety and Standards Authority faced significant pressure from the food industry during a tense meeting in March. According to recordings reviewed by Reuters, industry executives argued that warning labels could be confusing and ineffective, and urged regulators to focus instead on encouraging consumers to control portion sizes.

The State has discontinued proceedings against former Fiji Broadcasting Corporation chief executive officer Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and chief financial officer Vimlesh Sagar.
Senior FICAC prosecutor Setefano Komaibaba filed a nolle prosequi before the trial began this morning, formally discontinuing the prosecution and bringing the case to an end. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum faced charges of abuse of office for gain and an alternative charge of general dishonesty causing a loss, while Mr Sagar was charged with general dishonesty. Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was alleged to have pursued five legal proceedings without the knowledge and approval of the FBC board of directors, at a cost of $138,813.37, which the prosecution alleged were not in the interest of the company. The alleged incidents occurred between July 1, 2017, and January 31, 2023. The case is now closed.

The case against former FBC Chief Executive Officer Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and current Chief Financial Officer Vimlesh Sagar concerning legal fees has been closed.

The matter was brought to an end today at the Suva Magistrates Court after FICAC lawyer Setefano Koroibaba filed a Nolle Prosequi, formally indicating that the prosecution would not proceed with the case.

The development brings the legal proceedings against the two former and current FBC executives over the alleged legal fees to a close.

Man Fined ₹5,500 After Car Covered in 3,400 Lipstick Kiss Marks Goes Viral

A man in Gwalior, India, has been fined ₹5,500 after police caught him driving a car covered in around 3,400 lipstick kiss marks and allegedly performing a stunt on city roads.

The unusual car attracted attention after a video showing it covered in lipstick marks went viral on social media. The vehicle’s owner, Aditya Sikarwar, reportedly told local media that his girlfriend spent hours covering the car with the marks as part of what he described as a “foreign trend” and a social media stunt.

Sikarwar said neither of them realised that the act could result in a traffic violation.

“I had parked the car and stepped away, and a female friend of mine created the marks,” Sikarwar told NDTV, adding that he later posted a video of the vehicle on Instagram.

He said his friend believed the unusual stunt would attract attention online—and it did, with the video quickly going viral.

Gwalior Traffic Police took action after the footage surfaced online.

Traffic Police Inspector Abhishek Raghuvanshi said a video had emerged showing the car with lipstick-like marks driving through the City Centre area.

Police subsequently traced the vehicle under “Operation Eagle” and took Sikarwar to a police station.

Why was he fined?

Police reportedly issued Sikarwar a ₹5,500 challan under the Motor Vehicles Act for modifying the vehicle and violating traffic regulations.

Authorities also instructed him to remove all the lipstick marks from the car.

According to ANI, police seized the vehicle after alleging that it was being used for dangerous stunts on city roads. The action followed the circulation of the Instagram video.

What began as an attempt to create a viral social media moment ultimately resulted in a hefty fine, the vehicle being seized and thousands of lipstick marks having to be wiped off the car.
