Our Online Editor, Nicholas chose the iridescently colourful mantis shrimp for his STAFF PICK!

While tiny, it’s one of the most impressive ocean killers, slaying its prey in milliseconds. This skill in hunting (by either spearing or smashing techniques) and their complex social behaviours all work to illustrate how highly intelligent the mantis shrimp are.

With their great capacity to absorb knowledge, these mantis shrimp cleverly seek out and interact with other shrimp. Mantis shrimp can also see things humans can barely conceive of. Their eyes are thought to be the most multifaceted in the animal kingdom, with great colour and depth perception, as well as polarisation sensitivity all helping to make their brains super-efficient.

Our Head of Business Affairs, Brett adores the majestic manta rays of the Hauraki Gulf for his STAFF PICK!

The manta ray has the largest brain to body ratio of any living fish. They are sometimes called a 'devil fish' because of their two horns. In Spanish the word 'manta' describes their shape meaning blanket, coat or shawl.

Manta’s like to play with their food and they form long chains of zooplankton and krill and then glide in circles to create a spiral effect, catching this fish food in their wake. This constant swimming is crucial though as they must keep moving so that water can flow over their gills to respire/breathe.

Mapping their environment clearly using sight and smell – manta rays have demonstrated high levels of intelligence and long-term memory, similar to dolphins and elephants!

Today we have our Head of Technology, Wayne’s very loyal STAFF PICK: the kākāpō! This chunky parrot is a treasure of Aotearoa. In fact, it has won NZ’s Bird of the Year twice!

The kākāpō are arguably the longest-lived bird species in the world, estimated to reach 90 years. They have a real character, being frequently described as “quirky” even “strange” and a bit “dippy” but after working with them on a film in the 90s they still managed to steal Wayne’s heart. According to DOC, sadly there are only 244 kākāpō alive today…

Check out the kākāpō and lots of other flightless Kiwi birds in our footage library. Link in bio

NHNZ

NHNZ is an international production company that sees the world a little differently. Based in Dunedin, on New Zealand’s south east corner, we collaborate with some of the best filmmakers on the planet to make factual TV for the biggest global broadcasters. Our current client list includes PBS, Discovery, National Geographic, A&E, Nat Geo Wild, Travel, Animal Planet, Smithsonian, NHK, CCTV, Youku, Tencent, Arte, ZDF, France Télévisions and many more. Success has been recognized by more than 300 international awards, among them Emmy Awards, the industry’s highest accolade, and the prestigious Wildscreen Panda. NHNZ produces a diverse range of content from character-led series through to nature programming, kids, history and crime. 2018’s production output included ‘Jackie Chan’s Green Heroes’ for National Geographic, ‘Orangutan Jungle School’ for Channel 4, NHK and Love Nature, ‘In Their Own Words’ produced with 1895 Films for National Geographic, and ‘Fish My City’ for NG Wild. Premium blue chip natural history series ‘Big Pacific’, a co-production with PBS, was viewed by over 400 million viewers worldwide and ‘China From Above’, a co-production with National Geographic and CICC, was viewed by quarter of a billion viewers on Chinese online platform Tencent.

With four decades of experience to rely on, NHNZ’s productions are more than one hit wonders. Successful commercial relationships with some of the biggest players in media have seen NHNZ secure many repeat series. Rating success ‘I Survived..’, a crime series for A&E, ran for over 100 episodes. The hugely successful series ‘The Most Extreme’ for Animal Planet continued for six seasons and ‘Wild 24’ ran for three series for Nat Geo Wild. Currently NHNZ is building on the phenomenal global success of multi award-winning co-productions to be announced in 2019. In addition to creating premium content, NHNZ is also experienced in high volume, fast turnaround archive-based series. In the last three years alone, NHNZ has produced over 50 hours of archive-based factual shows, and over 250 hours of kids shows. Experts at blending footage from different sources into a seamless and compelling narrative, these archive-based shows are commercial overachievers as well as crowd pleasers. NHNZ’s stock footage library, NHNZ Moving Images, has a significant holding of more than 200,000 hours of footage from around the world. As well as its own unique footage, Moving Images represents world class cinematographers and libraries – including National Geographic Channel’s prestigious collection. NHNZ’s HQ is home to a state of the art production facility. In 2018, over six petabytes of data was processed, edited and delivered to clients around the world. NHNZ’s post facility has 12 full edit suites, four sound suites, and online and color correct suites that can deliver to the highest international UHD technical standards. Whether the focus is on people, nature, adventure, history, science or all of the above, we try to give it a unique perspective. Perhaps that’s why so much of our work is considered ground-breaking by our audiences, collaborators, partners, and a fair few awards juries. There’s a lot to be said for being based on the edge of the planet. www.nhnz.tv
