He tells PJ TAYLOR he was an original charter member of Bucklands Beach Lions, which celebrates half a century of voluntary community service next month. “Lions has given me a fantastic life.”

It was terrific catching up with these two great long-time contributors to the east Auckland community, Kathy Kennedy and Marin Burgess KSM, president and past-president respectively of the Howick and Districts Historical Society (amongst many roles), at the heritage Hawthorn Dene Homestead in Botany where the magnificent cafe is in that lovely quiet grassy setting surrounded by busy suburbia. This is a reminder about how fantastic that cafe is! The coffee is delicious. Have a good weekend. - PJ
