France has toughened the punishment for people who abandon their pets.

Under the current rules, abandoning a domestic animal can lead to up to 3 years in prison.

It can also come with a fine of up to €45,000.

That is a big jump from what many people expect for “just leaving a pet behind.”

France treats it as cruelty, not a mistake.

This comes from the country’s animal welfare push that became law in late 2021.

The goal was to cut down on abuse and reduce the wave of pets dumped every year.

The changes were not only about punishment.

France also added steps meant to prevent impulse buying and rushed adoptions.

One part is a “commitment” style document that new owners have to sign.

It’s meant to make people think hard before taking an animal home.

You can agree or disagree with how laws should work.

But the message here is pretty clear: pets are not disposable.

If you’ve ever adopted an animal, you already know it.

They don’t understand “holiday season” or “I got busy,” they just know they were left.

You think frogs just hop away from trouble? Some of the females do something way wilder.

In the breeding season, male European common frogs can swarm the few females that show up. The males grab fast, and they do not seem very picky.

That can turn dangerous. Sometimes several males cling to one female at once, forming a tight “mating ball” that can exhaust or even kill her.

Scientists watching this species noticed females are not always helpless. Many try to twist their bodies to break free, and some make sounds that can confuse the males.

But the most dramatic move is this: some females go stiff and totally still, like they are dead. It is called tonic immobility, and it can make the male loosen his grip.

It is not about being “lazy” or “dramatic.” It looks more like a last-resort way to escape harm when a male will not take the hint.

Next time you hear about “playing dead,” remember it is not just for escaping predators. Sometimes it is for dodging a date you never asked for.

He couldn’t see the finish line, but he still chased it. And this time, three dogs helped lead the way.

In March 2019, Thomas Panek became the first blind runner to complete the New York City Half Marathon led entirely by guide dogs. No human guide running beside him, just a team of dogs taking turns.

The dogs were Labrador retrievers named Westley, Waffle, and Gus. They ran in a relay, each guiding him for a few miles.

That matters because running in a crowded race is full of surprises. Curbs, potholes, and sudden stops can turn dangerous fast when you can’t see them coming.

Panek is also the president and CEO of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. The run helped shine a light on training dogs not just to guide, but to guide at a running pace.

And yes, the dogs got medals too. Because they earned them, one pawstep at a time.

For a moment, it looked like the most relaxed animal in California.
A black bear had found someone’s hot tub and treated it like a private spa.
The bear was caught on camera climbing in and soaking like it owned the place. People watching joked it would not leave until the bubbles stopped.
Police in Burbank, California, shared video of a bear sitting in a backyard whirlpool bath during a heat wave. After a bit, it climbed out and wandered off.
A separate “spa day” clip from San Bernardino County also showed a bear pushing off a hot tub cover and dipping in. Bears showing up in pools and hot tubs has become one more weird way they cope with heat and easy access to backyards.
It’s funny, but it’s also a reminder. If you live in bear country, locking up trash and removing food smells can matter as much as any fence.

There’s a kind of love that doesn’t really go away, even after years and years.
What we share with our pets can feel timeless - simple, loyal, and packed with memories that stick with us. They’re gone far sooner than we’re ready for, but the love they gave us can still feel present long after.
And maybe when our own time comes, they’ll be there to welcome us again - familiar eyes, happy energy, that same warm feeling. Because love like that doesn’t just vanish. It lingers in a place beyond goodbyes, where time doesn’t take anything from us.
If you’ve ever loved a pet and had to let them go, I hope you hold onto this: they mattered, and that bond mattered. In your memories they’re still close, and in a way, the love you shared is still there, steady as ever.

Up in the far north, Arctic wolves have been spotted doing something that seems odd at first.

They drag salmon out of rivers, even though swallowing the fish whole can be dangerous. Salmon often carry heavy parasite loads, and eating the flesh straight away can make a wolf seriously ill, or even kill it.

So why take the risk?

Because the wolves are not the only ones at the meal.

Once a salmon is hauled onto the bank, birds quickly show up. Ravens, gulls, and other scavengers tear into the fish, eating the sections most likely to be loaded with parasites. These birds are not affected the same way, so they can feed safely.

And what they leave behind matters.

After the birds finish, the remaining pieces are cleaner and safer for the wolves to eat. By waiting and letting the birds go first, the wolves turn a risky catch into a meal they can handle.

It is a good reminder that wild animals do not survive only by speed or strength. Sometimes they survive by patience, timing, and even a kind of shared routine between different species. In tough environments, knowing when to hold back can be just as important as knowing when to attack.
