Rim Books is an artist focused publishing venture, established in 1996 in Auckland, Aotearoa/ New Zealand to produce and promote publications of photographic art, applied arts, art history and exhibition catalogues, that may not easily be taken on by more mainstream publishers. Our aim is to retain the original vision of the authors/artists, while providing support for editing, design and producti

on to ensure enduring, high quality publications, without the constraints of commercial agendas. We are a small operation based in a small city in a small country, relying on networks of regional and international artists and authors who project, preserve and foster the independent voice intended for a world-wide audience.

New Rim Books at Melbourne Art Book Fair.
Place to Place - Matt Arbuckle

This monograph surveys Matt Arbuckle’s recent works made between 2019 and 2024, with particular attention to two exhibitions: Bow Echo (Two Rooms, Auckland, 2023) and Subduction and Abduction (Daine Singer, Naarm/Melbourne, 2024).

A prolific maker, Arbuckle’s practice is a process-driven exploration of place, with landscapes conceptualised through the very act of their making. Favouring process over outcome, Arbuckle employs elements of traditional Japanese shibori dyeing techniques — wrapping, twisting, folding, and draping fabric over found surfaces and structures — to create abstract compositions. The resulting paintings use depth and movement to trace and reveal abstract memories, imprinting the experience of place into the artwork.

New Rim Books at Melbourne Art Book Fair.
'Subject Failure' - Shaun Waugh.
Shaun is a New Zealand-based artist who lives and works in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. His work centres on the material culture of photographic history, critically examining the complex relationship between images and the realities they aim to depict.

Waugh highlights how photography can deceive, reduce, and seduce, to question the authenticity of photographic representations.

Richly illustrated with over 80 images arranged to emphasise Waugh’s reflexive use of colour, Subject Failure features new essays by Emma Ng, Marcus Moore, and Matt Plummer & Alice Tappenden, who each offer insights into Waugh’s engaging conceptual practice.
