Fehi Fineanganofo learned of his selection while celebrating with Josh Moorby, who had also been chosen.

Tears, missed calls and alcohol were all part of how some of the newest All Blacks reacted to their call-up from Dave Rennie.
Fehi Fineanganofo and Josh Moorby forced their way into the side with record-breaking performances for the Hurricanes this season, while Anton Segner becomes the first German-born All Black.

Speaking to Sky Sport after the squad was announced, Fineanganofo said he was with Moorby when the call came through.

“I was shocked and emotional, just wanted to call family and yeah, I saw this guy [Moorby] in the corner of my eye and I was like, ‘oh, he must be in there too’,” Fineanganofo said.

“I was like, yeah, happy for both of us.”

The 23-year-old said his mum’s response to his call-up made him emotional.

“Just like any typical mother, she’s just started crying, so I started crying too.”

Shaun Stevenson Commits to Samoa

Former All Black Shaun Stevenson has confirmed he will represent Samoa after deciding to switch his international allegiance from New Zealand.

The 29-year-old fullback, who qualifies for Samoa through his family heritage, revealed he has made up his mind ahead of becoming eligible later this year.

“Yeah, I’m putting my hand up, I think quite a few of us boys will be playing for Samoa come the November Test period.”

Stevenson earned one Test cap for the All Blacks in 2023, scoring on debut against Australia, but says he felt his opportunities with New Zealand Rugby had come to an end.

“It was a tough decision, I felt like I had a lot to offer New Zealand Rugby but I was out of favour with the previous coaches so you’ve got to make those hard decisions.”

The former Chiefs star has enjoyed a standout season with Japan’s Kubota Spears and will complete the required stand-down period in August, making him available for Samoa’s November Tests against Portugal, Zimbabwe and Spain.

Looking ahead, Stevenson is optimistic about what Manu Samoa can achieve.

Lakapi Samoa has said Shaun Stevenson’s pledge to Manu Samoa is part of a wider push to strengthen the national team’s player base, with former All Blacks Akira Ioane and Josh Ioane also among the names being looked at.
