Following a review of the results process at the Tāmaki Makaurau kapa haka regionals, a systems error affecting the overall placings in the Kōanga section was identified. The amended Kōanga results confirm Te Waka Huia as the second-place recipient of the 2026 Tāmaki Makaurau Regional Competition. As it stands Angitu in first place, Te Waka Huia second, and Nga Tumanako third.

Prominent Māori academic and leader, Emeritus Professor Whatarangi (Ngāti Raukawa) has passed away. He is well known for his dedication and tireless work in revitalising te reo Māori within his iwi of Ngāti Raukawa, setting up the 25-year Whakatupuranga Rua Mano, founded Te Wānanga o Raukawa—the first by Māori, for Māori tertiary provider and served as the first President of the Māori Party in 2004.

Tangi mapu kau ana te iwi Māori i ngā mate nui o te wā. Ko Tā Tamati Reedy tērā, ko Tā Hirini Moko Mead tērā, ko kui Tārati Buckley tērā, ko te rangatira o Ngāti Raukawa, a Ahorangi Whatarangi Winiata tērā kua riro ki te pō.

Te ao Māori is once again at a loss with the passing of Emeritus Professor Whatarangi Winiata (Ngāti Raukawa).

He is well known for his dedication and tireless work in revitalising te reo Māori within his iwi of Ngāti Raukawa, setting up the 25-year Whakatupuranga Rua Mano (Generation 2000) strategy which helped in setting up initiatives to boost Māori development within the iwi.

He founded Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Ōtaki, the first tertiary provider in Aotearoa run by-Māori, for-Māori.

He was also an important figure in the establishment of the Māori Party in 2004, serving as the party’s first President.
