Foodstuffs NZ Managing Director Chris Quin said there was good news in the produce aisle, with prices improving as supply builds.

“As we head into summer, there’s more sunshine and more variety on shelf. Covered crops like tomatoes, cucumbers and capsicums are providing great value right now. Strawberries are at their peak, asparagus is in season, and main-season blueberries are arriving.”

The Government has increased penalties for misleading advertising and other breaches of fair trading law to deter underhand business practices.

Economic Growth Minister Nicola Willis said that once the changes take effect, serious offenders will be liable for fines of up to tens of millions of dollars if they have gained significant amounts from breaching the law.

“October’s rise was the fastest pace of supplier cost increases since mid-2024,” said Infometrics Chief Executive and Principal Economist Brad Olsen.

“Material cost increases for a number of key items continue to drive an acceleration in the GSCI annual increase, with protein cost rises now a more dominant driver. Underlying costs for other items, like chocolate, are also continuing to rise."
