After the amazing Spy Thriller Black Bag last year, Steven Soderbergh returns with The Christophers. This is a smart, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt drama that explores art, legacy, and the messy relationship between creators and their work.

The film follows Julian Sklar, a once-celebrated painter whose family secretly hires struggling artist Lori Butler to finish his unfinished masterpieces behind his back, so they are worth a fortune after he passes. What begins as an intriguing art-world scheme of forgery evolves into something far more thoughtful and emotional.

Ian McKellen is mesmerising to watch, bringing equal parts wit, arrogance, vulnerability, and charm to Julian. Michaela Coel is just as impressive, giving Lori depth and authenticity as she grapples with her own creative frustrations. Their chemistry drives the film and sparks fascinating conversations about authenticity, criticism, and artistic purpose.

Like many of his previous films, Soderbergh keeps the focus on character and dialogue rather than spectacle, allowing the performances and sharp writing to shine.

A thoughtful, mature, and engaging film elevated by two outstanding performances. One of Soderbergh's most quietly rewarding works.

After the disaster that was the 2021 Mortal Kombat, I was hoping the sequel could finally redeem the franchise… and while it’s definitely an improvement, it still doesn’t quite land.

The action is bigger, louder, bloodier, and packed with fan service, but there’s still very little emotional weight or real stakes to make the fights truly hit.

Karl Urban steps in as fan-favourite Johnny Cage, bringing plenty of charisma and star power, even if the fight scenes don’t fully showcase the physicality the role needs. Meanwhile, Josh Lawson absolutely steals the movie again as Kano, delivering the funniest lines with his sarcastic, foul-mouthed energy. His chemistry with Urban is easily one of the film’s highlights.

The fatalities are brutal, the powers are over-the-top, and longtime fans of the games will probably have a blast spotting all the references. Mortal Kombat II fully embraces the chaos and ridiculousness of the franchise — for better and worse.

Hardcore fans will likely enjoy seeing these characters brought to life, but everyone else may walk away feeling a little underwhelmed.
