Those of you that know me, know I’m a sucker for lists. And none better than a film list. A bit late to the party here, but here’s a rundown of my top 10 films of 2020 so far.
Serious omissions in the watch list include the Small Axe anthology, The Assistant, First Cow, Never Rarely Sometimes Always, The Painter and The Thief amongst many.
1. David Byrne’s American Utopia. Arguably the best concert movie ever made. Uplifting in ways indescribable.
2. Nomadland. Lyrical and mesmerising - like watching a poem unfold.
3. Promising Young Woman. So horrifying it’s literally nauseating.
4. I’m Thinking of Ending Things. A brain pounder in all the best ways.
5. The Personal History of David Copperfield. Genuinely lovely.
6. Mank. Drunk Gary Oldman makes his Churchill impression seem pantomime.
7. The True History of the Kelly Gang. Russel Crowe is a film’s MVP for the first time in 20 years.
8. Another Round. Somehow still makes you want to move to Denmark.
9. Baby Done. As joyously kiwi as anything that has been put to screen.
10. Possessor. Sean Bean plays a billionaire villain - need I say more.
