Today, we throw the spotlight on to Big Mess Jess and Fang, the missing kitten. Book 3 of four Big Mess Jess books in the Reading Adventures series!

Ow! Jess has hurt her paw so Pip and Mum whisk her off to the vet. This is NOT Jess’s favourite place but when she sees a tiny, fluffy kitten called Fang run out of the waiting room she knows she needs to help. Then the vet gives her an injection and Jess forgets all about the kitten. The next day Jess causes chaos as she escapes her cage and – oh my – then she remembers Fang.

FREE DOWNLOADS 🎉🎉🎉

Reading Adventures consists of two, parallel, four-book series. The books progress through the same Scope and Sequence (which also aligns with our Sunshine Phonics decodables series).

To read Book 1, students only need to know the simple alphabetic code: consonants and short vowel sounds. Book 2 adds consonant digraphs and vowel digraphs & trigraphs. Book 3 adds more vowel digraphs & trigraphs and the schwa. Book 4 adds adjacent consonants.

ILLUSTRATOR SPOTLIGHT | David Arumi (illustrator of Jet Pack Jack)

David Arumi was born in Barcelona in 1983. His fondness for drawing and art led him to study Art Grafic at Escola Joso in Barcelona.

He did his postgraduate studies in Illustration for Children’s Publications and Creative Illustration at Escola Eina. Soon after he finished his first illustration book in 2006, Spanish publishers began to approach him.

Since then, David has been working as a freelance illustrator for several publishers, magazines and advertising agencies. He usually works digitally, drawing and painting directly on the screen with his iPad Pro.

He can gladly say that his hobby has become his career, and he hopes this will last forever. You can see more of David’s work here:

ILLUSTRATOR SPOTLIGHT | Mauro Mazzara (illustrator of Big Mess Jess)

Mauro Mazzara picked up a pencil at the age of two… and has not stopped since! Having graduated as an advertising graphic designer (drawing even when he shouldn’t have), he enrolled at the Civica Scuola Arte & Messaggio in Milan.

Having then (finally!) graduated as an illustrator designer, he decided to learn Painting at the Brera Academy. As a painter he has exhibited in personal and collective exhibitions in Italy (Milan, Rome, Florence among others) and abroad (London, Berlin, Zurich, MEAM Barcelona).

For years he has worked as a freelance illustrator for communication, fashion and publishing. His books are published all over the world and, among other recognitions, he is in several Illustrators Annuals. Mauro often draws for sport, his other great passion, which has led him to be a Baskin (inclusive basketball) coach since 2016.

He teaches drawing, illustration and painting at Scuola Internazionale Comics in Milan and NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti. Since 2020 Mauro is the proud father of Anna, who he draws once a month.

This week, we throw the spotlight on to Jet Pack Jack and the fox’s teeth. Book 2 of four Jet Pack Jack books in the Reading Adventures series!

Jack and Rex are at the zoo. The animals are so cool! But when rain starts to fall, a soaking wet Jack falls into a bad mood. And so does the jet pack – rain is not good for jet packs. More disaster strikes when they see a small girl stranded in the fox’s den. With the jet pack playing up, Jack and Rex need to come up with plan to save her. How about Rex as fox bait? Can it work or is he too chicken?
