Artwork/Adornment/ Pākē, Armour, 2025 is a unique adornment created from muka, pokinikini, uku beads, and lamb bones. (Note promotion is for the Pākē - rain cape only)

Description
Found discarded, the remnants of someone great,
taonga that once adorned a wahine toa
as fierce and strong as Hine Nui Te Po
The warning sound of pokinikini rattling
bones clanging against one another
Last moments are filled with a swaying shroud
Disappearing into the distance
Her maro reflecting the warmth of dawn
Warmth like the a last embrace
She has risen, they have fallen
He kakano ahau
We are the seeds sown by the wahine before us.

Bateman, are committed to manaakitanga, celebrating and actively promoting the diversity and inclusivity of Aotearoa New Zealand so that all voices can be heard. First and foremost, that means respecting Māori as tangata whenua; it also means respecting the culture of Pacific peoples and the many other cultures residing in Aotearoa. It means always being on the lookout for new ways of embracing te ao Māori in our business practice, in the people we do business with, and in the kinds of books we publish. We recognise the need for a diversity of stories to be shared, and for the tellers of those stories to maintain their story sovereignty.

Kia anga whakamua, me titiro ki o tatou mua. To move forward, we must first look to the past.

Through art, kupu, traditions and, through ancient rhythms and ceremony, creativity is what continues to ignite the ahi kā within us so that we may shapeshift into vessels that serve one another, upholding manaakitanga and kotahitanga as we serve all.

From the fried bread at the marae to the culinary streets of New York, from weaving new nets to tending ancient narratives, from celebrating ikura to grieving loved ones, this is a space where there are no sheep—only rangatira in their own right, masters of transformation and leaders of self.

I acknowledge all the amazing contributors who use themselves as a vessel for sharing the stories carried down, through and beyond, and to all our HĀTUA Whānau readers who continue to keep our waka moving – Editor Note
