Olivia Laing's latest novel The Silver Book is out now!

A q***r love story and a noirish thriller, The Silver Book transports readers to 1970s Italy, a world of film sets, desire, and deception. When a young English artist meets famed designer Danilo Donati in Venice, he’s swept into the glittering illusion of Italian cinema, where nothing is as it seems.

From the author of Crudo and Everybody, The Silver Book explores the dangerous interplay between art and truth, illusion and reality, love and power.

The much anticipated memoir 'of sorts' from Margaret Atwood has arrived!

From her childhood in the Canadian far north, through the writing of The Handmaid's Tale, to her position today as revered truth-teller, Book of Lives encompasses the life and work of one of our most influential literary icons.

‘A memoir is what you can remember, and you remember mostly stupid things, catastrophes, revenges, and times of political horror, so I put those in – but I also added moments of joy, and surprising events and, of course, the books. I hope you’ll have as much fun reading Book of Lives as I did writing it.’ - Margaret Atwood

If not for yourself, this would make a fabulous gift for the upcoming holiday season!

For thirty years Anne Enright has been paying attention. Casting her lucid and distinctive gaze across the world, literature and her own life.

Attention brings Anne’s wide-ranging cultural criticism, literary and autobiographical writing together for the first time. In Enright’s fiction, speech can transform, rupture, enliven and liberate. In these essays, she speaks to us directly. Electrifying, probing and exuberant, this is a defining collection from one of our most distinguished literary voices.

A huge congratulations to Barbara Else and Ross Calman, who have each been recognised at the Prime Minister’s Awards for Literary Achievement 2025. Barbara received the award for fiction and Ross for non-fiction 👏

Both have made lasting contributions to Aotearoa’s literary landscape, through Barbara’s much-loved Go Girl and Tales of Fontania and Ross’s work as a writer and translator of te reo Māori and New Zealand history.

As Kent Gardner, Chair of the Arts Council of New Zealand Toi Aotearoa, says:
“While most writing awards are tied to a specific piece of work, these awards recognise the writers as individual practitioners with successful careers in the literary sector. We’re celebrating bodies of work that are the result of years of application to the art and craft of writing.”

We’re so proud to celebrate two of our Penguin authors being honoured for their outstanding contributions to New Zealand literature.

Martha Mullins is a misfit. Academic and shy, Martha finds herself fascinated by the underworld, a place she learns about in Roman mythology classes at school. To Martha, the underworld and its divine inhabitants provide a place of refuge, escape, imagination and desire.

But Martha also finds joy in friendship. Connection. Intimacy. It’s Martha’s band of friends who show her the value in spontaneity, fun, laughter.

Until things go wrong.

How will Martha find her way in the world where she cannot be herself? Will she ever find a home for the love she feels?

'The Underworld' is a wondrous novel from an author who wields her considerable powers with assuredness and grace. Funny, brave, insightful and clever, Martha will break your heart – then mend it – many times over.
