I once again had the pleasure of working with Allen Diamanti, this time on his 3rd book, The Pelorus Boy.
You can’t tell the history of a man without an understanding of life on a back country farm and the people that surrounded him. It was the time for a generation of New Zealanders, many the grandchildren of colonists and settlers, to face a new Century that would bring more advancement to mankind than any before it. In their lifetime they would fight in two world wars, endure the great depression; and see man go from learning to fly to walking on the moon. They were a new “breed” in a young country, no longer shackled by Imperialism or the restraints of the Victorian era. However they retained the values of their forbears, truly believing that “no challenge could not be overcome” for if you toiled hard and worked in unison, almost anything could be achieved……
When their country called, our young males answered; but it was mainly the rural men with horses who volunteered for the Mounted Brigade. They would arrive in Egypt as the best prepared troops and mounts, setting an example for other nations to aspire to. Their deeds were such that the Allied commander, Lord Allenby, was to later comment “It is a historical fact that there were no cavalry that came out of the war with a better reputation than the New Zealand Mounted Rifles in Palestine”
