🌊🏠 South Dunedin Homes Could Be Bought As Climate Risks Grow

Thousands of South Dunedin residents are being asked to consider major changes as councils plan for rising flood and climate risks.

⚠️ Between 1,100 and 1,700 properties could potentially be acquired over coming decades to make way for flood protection projects, raised land, green spaces, wetlands, and improved water management.

💰 The proposed adaptation plans could cost between $1.6 billion and $2.4 billion over the next 100 years, but officials say doing nothing would cost even more.

🗣️ Some residents say they were shocked to learn their homes may be affected, while others support long-term solutions to protect the community from future flooding.

📅 Public consultation is expected to begin soon, giving locals the chance to have their say on South Dunedin's future.

🌊🇳🇿Unprecedented' El Niño Could Hit New Zealand This Year

⚠️ Climate experts are warning that a potentially record-breaking El Niño is developing in the Pacific and could become one of the strongest ever recorded.

🌡️ Ocean temperatures have rapidly shifted from La Niña conditions earlier this year, with some forecasts suggesting sea temperatures could rise more than 3°C above average.

🔥 For New Zealand, this could mean:
• Drier and windier weather across many regions
• Increased risk of drought and wildfires
• Particularly tough conditions for Canterbury, which is already experiencing drought

🌧️ While impacts are not guaranteed, scientists say the developing El Niño has the potential to rival or exceed past "Super El Niño" events.

📢 Earth Sciences New Zealand is expected to officially declare an El Niño event in the coming weeks.

⚠️ Police say some interactions may involve intimidation and are urging people not to engage and to report any incidents immediately.

📞 Authorities are asking anyone approached to contact police as soon as possible.

🔥⚖️ A South Auckland woman has been found guilty of arson after a jury ruled she deliberately set fire to her partner’s “man cave” shed in 2022.

🚨 Laura Katharina Williams, 30, was convicted in the Manukau District Court after voice messages sent just before the blaze were presented as key evidence.

💬 In one message, she allegedly said: “All your s***’s already burnt,” which prosecutors argued showed clear intent before the fire started.

👩‍⚖️ Williams denied the allegations, claiming the voice in the messages was not hers, and her defence argued there was no proof she started the fire.

⚖️ After a two-day trial, the jury found her guilty. She is due to be sentenced later this year.

🚧🌙 Wellington residents are speaking out as Wellington Water begins nearly a month of overnight wastewater pipe works on Holloway Road.

🛠️ The road is being closed from 7pm–5am for more than three weeks to replace a 100-year-old pipe as part of a major infrastructure upgrade.

😴 Locals say they were given short notice and are frustrated about noise, vibration, and disruption, with some calling the communication “unbelievable”.

💬 Wellington Water says night works are needed to reduce disruption and safety risks, and that daytime work would take longer and cost more.

⚠️ Despite objections, the project has gone ahead, with residents urging better communication and planning for future works.

🚨🚗 Serious concerns are rising in Central Hawke’s Bay after reports of boy racers pouring diesel on rural roads to do burnouts and drifting.

⚠️ Local leaders say the behaviour on roads like Pōrangahau Rd and around Takapau is extremely dangerous and could lead to a fatal crash.

👮 Police and council say groups of 5 to 40 vehicles have been gathering, with some incidents shared and encouraged on social media.

💬 Officials are urging the public to call 111 if they witness anything, warning that the issue is happening regularly and damaging roads, fences, and private property.

💔 Authorities say they fear someone will be seriously injured or killed if it continues.
