“With a huge abundance of the fun sweet pea ‘Blue Shift’ in the garden, I decided to play further in the same palette. Opening as magenta, deepening to purple then fading to blue, I complemented the sweet peas with some frou-frou bearded irises, jewel-coloured aquilegia and rich green foliage from a neighbour’s elder tree that was poking through the fence. Airy, cream heuchera flower and spiky purple toadflax fade out the top line and all were plunged into a tall, glam brass vase. The sweet peas were still flowering on lovely extra long stems, but due to their delicacy I added them last, poking them in to be supported on each other and the surrounding stems, with toes still reaching the water. I love the resulting luxurious overflow effect.” -Julia

Choc cake à la bundt

“There’s a hole in this cake. But there doesn’t have to be. The same batter can be popped into a 22cm cake pan and baked as a round if that’s more your style. Regardless of shape, this cake is all you want from a moist (yep, I said it), rich chockie cake. Secret ingredients being the vinegar and espresso coffee
