Running Together Running Together seeks to showcase this glorious diversity and grow the appreciation that there may be other runners out there for just about anyone to join.

How do you make to 100 and still be very active while inspiring many to exercise? A little luck helps. However, Colin Thorne has a simple message of getting the basics right, daily while being grateful. It’s certainly worked for him and no reason it can’t help the rest of us. Hagley Parkruns, as so many other parkruns, brings people together every Saturday morning for free exercise at the level you decide. Colin’s presence on March 23rd reminded us of life’s power for good through movement and a generous heart.

Run happy, run inspired.

Bro’s in spikes (or 2 Lap Lads) - Part 1
There is a perception that track running is for elite and is hyper competitive. That was my view until I gave it a go. What I found was a community of people who shared the love for running, who often trained together and were supportive before and after a race. Indeed, I have seen helpful behaviour toward others during races. For me, I run middle distance so 800m is often a go to event. Only two laps but lots can happen. Luckily, I have found four talented two lap enthusiasts who span generations. It demonstrates the common bonds and the way people connect, despite different life experiences. Ethan Smolej, Shaun Fauth, Phil Harrison, and Malcolm Cornelius share their remarkable running journeys and life lessons with each other and you. Join them on Running Together this Friday, March 1st from 12:30pm on Plains FM 96.9 or afterwards on Apple Podcasts at:

The youth is our future. Whatever the sport or organisation, new ideas, passion, and opportunities will lead to sustaining the good of the present while improving those aspects that don’t work from the past. For Thomas Clarke, so much of what he does comes with a maturity beyond his years and a vigour that exemplifies the best of his age. Part of the running scene not long after walking, he has been profoundly affected by the community spirit of his parents and their desire for him to fully explore every opportunity. What does Cookie Time, Medicine, and Running have in common? Thomas will explain and more on Running Together this Friday, February 16th from 12:30pm on Plains FM 96.9 or afterwards on Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-together/id1597355515 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/7E0gpB2NPi3BTSi9y52oRi?si=a60098ab381d406f

The backyard ultra in late 2023 had local runner, Sam Harvey, complete over 600km in 70 hours. That is an example of incredible endurance. At the other end, there are the sprinters except that there are even shorter runners who use running for height, the high jumpers. Amazingly, they are “running” for only a few seconds, about 20m, and 10 strides. Hamish Kerr is easily the most successful and best high jumper New Zealand has ever produced. The current Commonwealth Games champion among many achievements. Yet, few may realise his love for running and its place in his athletics journey. What even fewer may appreciate is his generosity toward giving back to the sport he is passionate about, an exemplar to all of us. Listen to the many insights of becoming and living the life of a professional athlete on Running Together Plains FM 96.9 this Friday, January 19th from 12:30pm or afterwards on Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-together/id1597355515 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/7E0gpB2NPi3BTSi9y52oRi?si=a60098ab381d406f

It’s easy to get distracted by others, to be influenced by them and do what they do if it seems successful for them or socially popular. Yet, knowing oneself and what is best for ourselves, resisting the forces of trying to emulate someone else, can be a powerful advantage. For young athletes, especially teenage boys, it’s tempting to see what older runners do and copy it, forgetting that their bodies are still developing, that each person has their own unique capacity. For Tram O'Callaghan, this lesson was learned early and the results have been positive. Tram is the poster boy of a person who loves to run, who typically finds its a joyful experience. Listen to his eventful journey on Running Together on Plains FM, 96.9 this Friday, January 5th from 12:30pm or afterwards on Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-together/id1597355515 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/7E0gpB2NPi3BTSi9y52oRi?si=a60098ab381d406f

There are 2 key themes about the guest this week. They are likely to be related. One is her natural positivity and eagerness to engage with others, to find and share the glass half full. It makes being around her an uplifting experience. The second theme is about growth, excellence, and the seeking of new opportunities, new learnings. Being a teacher, she has already witnessed the life changing power of her words and actions. A gentle smiling force for good. Harriet Kingston recently achieved a running goal she thought previously beyond her. Achievements sometimes bring unexpected learnings and new directions. Learn more about Harriet and her life journey on Running Together, this Friday, December 22nd at 12:30pm on Plains FM96.9 and afterwards on Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-together/id1597355515 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/7E0gpB2NPi3BTSi9y52oRi?si=a60098ab381d406f

Guiding and Striving with Rosie Hay and Paul Barclay

Ever tried to balance on one foot with your eyes closed? It’s not easy for most of us. Imagine running without sight. It sounds impossible or very dangerous to say the least. For those visually impaired or blind, running is an option with the help of others. A guide can provide the sight and together, they can truly run, as a harmonious team. It’s a challenge though and takes a huge amount of trust, built up over time. Through the Achilles International organisation, an inspirational soul who lost his sight 35 years ago gets to achieve his running goals while a busy lady selflessly guides him and finds many surprising benefits along the way. Listen to their uplifting journey on Running Together this Friday, 8th December, on Plains FM96.9 from 12:30pm and later on later Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-together/id1597355515 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/7E0gpB2NPi3BTSi9y52oRi?si=a60098ab381d406f

A few dedicated runners achieve much without the support or favourable genes from their parents. However, it is much more common for those who excel, especially in their youth, do so with the encouragement, patience, and commitment of at least one parent. If that parent has warm memories of their own running experiences along with some success, all the better. Sean O’Sullivan is the running dad that every aspiring sprinter longs to have. A fine athlete in his day, his dedication to his children and their pursuit of excellence is an uplifting example for most. Son, Finn has demonstrated great talent but even more resilience through injuries and setbacks. Daughter, Tilly has battled with the challenges of early teens in sport and is now beginning to demonstrate an awesome potential. A true running family that may sprint on the track but have surprisingly endurance focused adventures. Listen to their delightful and revealing banter on Running Together, Friday, November 24th from 12:30pm on Plains FM 96.9 and later Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-together/id1597355515 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/7E0gpB2NPi3BTSi9y52oRi?si=a60098ab381d406f

We are all touched by tragedies and loss in our lives. How we respond to that says something about what is truely important to us and who is really important to us. Amy Whitehead has experienced the loss of a loved one and her response is how she used running (and walking) creatively for the betterment of others. Its a fascinating and uplifting story that Amy shares on Running Together this Friday, November 10th, at 12:30pm on Plains FM 96.9 or later on Apple Podcasts at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/running-together/id1597355515 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/7E0gpB2NPi3BTSi9y52oRi?si=a60098ab381d406f
