Big game hunters are not pantomime villains

Those who pay vast sums to shoot the ‘Big 5’ in Africa do much more to protect species than their armchair critics

OPINION: These initiatives are not about undermining conservation. They are about getting better, more durable outcomes through greater collaboration and smarter thinking.

Maybe the Last Chance to Save the Wapiti Herd – HAVE YOUR SAY

The Herds of Special Interest Amendment Bill is now before Parliament. Initially this bill is about one thing: saving the Wapiti herd in Fiordland National Park.

In the future other herds will benefit from this bill. This could be NZs only opportunity “Ever “ to make a difference.

If it doesn’t pass, the challenges facing the Wapiti won’t go away—they’ll get worse.

Why This Bill Matters:
✅ It allows the Wapiti to be officially managed as a Herd of Special Interest (HOSI).
✅ It’s a simple solution that will allow other herds in National parks to become Herds of Special Interest in the future.
✅ It offers a clear, practical solution for managing valued game animals inside National Parks.

New Zealand has tried for over 50 years to eradicate wild animals from our National Parks—and failed. The reality is these herds are here to stay. Active management is the best control tool we have.

The Wapiti area already has some of the highest levels of deer control in the country, with a strong focus on environmental impacts first, and hunting second.

What You Can Do:
🗓️ Submissions close at 11.59pm on Thursday, 24 July 2025
This is your chance to show support for the Wapiti and for practical, science-based game management.

The Wapiti Herd deserves a future—this is our chance to make sure it has one.
