H5N1 bird flu has been detected in two migratory seabirds in Western Australia, and Minister for Biosecurity Andrew Hoggard says New Zealand poultry operators should start preparing for it arriving on our shores.

“It’s almost a case of when, not if,” he says.

It has impacted virtually everywhere else in the world except Oceania. He says his focus has been on making sure the poultry sector is ready to manage it if it arrives.

Conservation Minister Tama Potaka has dismissed claims that the Conservation Amendment Bill could make up to 60% of public conservation land eligible for disposal, saying the figure misrepresents what the bill does ✍️

“It’s spurious and scandalous, mischievous and dangerous to be talking like that,” he says.
“There’s no way we’re selling off 60%, or even 6%, or even 1% of the country.”

He says the bill creates a clear process for disposing of small parcels that carry liabilities and have nothing to do with biodiversity, heritage, or recreation.

Ecolab has replaced their blue drum with a solid-block chemical system that removes the handling risk from dairy shed hygiene routines.

The system launched at Fieldays at Mystery Creek last year and is now operating across the country.

Darren Stenning, Business Development Lead at Ecolab, says the early response has been driven by the case for safety.

With the government’s Conservation Amendment Bill currently open for public submissions, concerns are growing that up to 60 percent of New Zealand's conservation land could become eligible for sale or exchange.

A new Curia Market Research poll, commissioned by Forest & Bird, has revealed that two-thirds of New Zealand voters strongly oppose the sale of the conservation estate.

Forest & Bird Chief Advisor, Richard Capie, says farmers enjoy their neighbouring conservation land and don't want to lose access to it 🏔️ 🌲

We spoke to Capie today on CountryWide Connect. Join us from 11am tomorrow when we interview Conservation Minister and proponent of the Bill, Tama Potaka.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand is leading a multi-year project to better understand genetic resistance to internal parasites in beef cattle, an area where knowledge has lagged behind that in sheep breeding.

The focus is on young cattle from weaning to yearling age, measuring faecal egg counts, immune response, and collecting DNA data across key commercial and stud herds 🐮

The long-term goal is to build tools for phenotyping and eventually genomic selection for parasite resistance in beef cattle.

The first European plough was used in New Zealand more than 200 years ago, in 1820, when missionary John Butler turned the first furrow at Kerikeri. Usually, bullocks and horses were used for powering early farm machinery 🐴

Power Farming New Zealand showcased some of this amazing history in action earlier this year at the Ploughing Championships.

The controversial Fisheries Amendment Bill has been shelved this week following more than 33,000 public submissions against it. That's the second-highest submission count ever in New Zealand history 🎣

The bill proposed to reduce penalties for overfishing quotas, remove minimum size limits on fish, and loosen restrictions on the commercial sector. Yet recreational fishers, iwi and conservation groups were not consulted on any of this.

Fishing advocate and ITM Fishing Show host Matt Watson celebrated the outcome on CountryWide Connect. Full interview below ⬇️
