This was shot for Mini Thinkers on location in Dunedin and was a whole heap of fun. The Brief: Showcase the lifestyle opportunities that Nelson people have right on their doorstep. This was shot for a healthcare client. I was quite surprised to visit such a variety of places, including Rainbow Ski Area and Abel Tasman National Park for this one – all within a short drive from the city. I also found a great spot to shoot the city itself and it looked amazing in the late winter dusk. This shot is a super-hi-res image designed for huge usage on billboards. I felt a pang on envy for Nelson people ... they seem to have it all on their doorstep.

The Brief: Capture everyday Aucklanders going about their daily fitness rituals in and around the city. This was so much fun, with some extremely cool people and we even got to jump in the sea at Te Henga (Bethells Beach) at the end of the day for some surf photography. It's always fun shooting in a city – especially when you can mix urban energy with the wild places right on Auckland's doorstep.

On assignment for a book project a few years back I had the good fortune to be able to photograph Lake Heron Station working alongside writer Paul Hersey. The station had been nearly 100 years in the Todhunter family at that stage and was immaculate. Owners Philip and Anne are accomplished mountaineers and so it seems fitting that their station lies at the foot of the Arrowsmith Range.

Pretty stoked to be featured on Silent Peak Photo. I knew I had been in the game a long time, but to go back to my days bulk-rolling Fuji Velvia, eating noodles and having a no fixed abode address was an eye opener. Pretty amazing also to have shot with Canon that whole time and I even have a few of my first film cameras on a shelf at home. Full story here ...
