Lions Mane Jellyfish have landed on some Tasman and Hauraki Gulf beaches. Click the article for more details.

Stingers can still be active, and some people may require first aid.

Lion's mane jellyfish get their name from their spectacular, flowing tentacles that look like a lion's mane. Here in New Zealand waters, they're typically around 50 centimetres across, though they can grow much larger, over two metres, in colder northern regions. The bigger ones tend to stay....

From our group page

Great Work. We're looking forward to seeing it up and running again.

Metservice is making steady progress repairing the Rain Radar at Hokitika.

This is a vital tool for Lert info, especially for rain events and Thunderstorms. We also have a couple of other tools to get a more complete picture when it turns nasty but not as good as MetService New Zealand

Westland Radar: Repair Update 🔨

We’re making steady progress toward restoring the Westland Rain Radar near Hokitika, which was severely damaged by a powerful lightning strike in September⚡

Our goal is to have it fully operational by the end of the year.

Here’s the latest update on repairs:

• We have undertaken a full diagnosis of the radar, and its main systems (the transmitter and receiver) have checked out OK. However, some components on the antenna need replaced, and new parts have been ordered.
• A new radome (the radar’s protective shell) is on its way from Italy and is expected to arrive by the end of November.
• Once replacement parts are in place we’ll be able to begin testing and calibrating the radar while we wait for the new radome to arrive. This approach will allow us to get the radar back up and running as soon as possible.

In the meantime, our meteorologists continue to deliver accurate and timely forecasts and warnings using the other tools available to them, including satellite imagery, automatic weather stations, and our advanced computer models. 📡

We know how important this radar is to West Coast communities. We’re committed to getting it back online and appreciate your patience and support!

⚠️ Heavy snow risks from mid afternoon Monday to Tuesday morning ❄️
❄️ Over the past few days, consistency in the models for heavy snow risks above 400 to 800m, with up to 20cm above 700 to 800m.
There's a risk it may drop to 300m for time with lesser amounts.
❄️ Snow has settled on the Leith Saddle Nth of Dunedin. (pic - 2pm)
❄️ Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook look to see the most significant with the potential of seeing 15 to 30cm of snow from this system, if not more, especially Mount Cook.

A couple of days reprieve till Monday. 🙌 After that, it turns to ***** again.
In all my 69 years (less childhood years) there must only be 5 years when it's ever been fine ALL three days of Labour weekend.
